Avgerinos turns Badger luck around on the final day of the Seminole All-Conference Showdown

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After suffering a three-set loss on the first day of the Seminole All-Conference Showdown, senior Maria Avgerinos proved she would not lose again. She became the consolation champion of her bracket Sunday morning.

Avgerinos marked her first win on Saturday as she dispatched Oklahoma's Serena Nash, 6-0, 6-3. On Sunday, she overcame South Florida's Vera Bessonova, 6-4, 6-1, to take the consolation crown. With yet another win under her belt, Avgerinos continues to lead the Badgers in singles wins this fall.

Freshman Michelle Linden also began to turn the Badger luck around on her last day in Florida. After a pair of singles losses earlier in the tournament, Linden quickly defeated Central Florida's Emilia Granstrom, 6-1, 6-2. She evened her overall record of 7-7 this fall.

Freshman Melissa Pick continued to put up a strong fight in singles play against her Central Florida opponent. She conquered her first set 6-7, but was unable to maintain that momentum, falling in the final two sets, 6-4, 11-9.

The Seminole All-Conference Showdown marks the completion of the Badgers' fall season. They will continue to practice in the following months before resuming play with dual match season, starting Jan. 21.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.
– Wisconsin knew it was going into a tough situation at the Seminole All-Conference Showdown on the campus of Florida State this weekend. Facing top competition on day two, UW netted just one win, but battled tough on several other courts.

The day started on the doubles court where the Badgers came up empty. The combo of Sydney Rider and Kelsey Grambeau went down swinging however, falling 8-6 to Oklahoma's Serena Nash and Julie Byrne.

In singles action, senior Maria Avgerinos bounced back from a bitter three-set loss on Friday to take down Oklahoma's Nash, 6-0, 6-3. Avgerinos now leads the Badger with eight singles win this fall.

UW's freshmen Melissa Pick and Michelle Linden each took their opponent the distance before coming up short. Pick rebounded from a 6-2 opening set loss, to post a 6-2 win in the second frame, before falling 10-5 in the extra set. Linden showed maturity beyond her age by erasing a 6-0 first set loss to win the second stanza, 7-6 (4), before ultimately dropping a 6-3 final set.

The Seminole Showdown will conclude on Sunday at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.
– After the first day of play at the Seminole All-Conference Showdown, the Badgers finish with one singles and one doubles victory on Friday.

With only a few months of collegiate play under her belt, freshman Melissa Pick has already proven to be an instrumental player for the Badgers. She defeated Oklahoma's Christiana Brigante in quick sets, 6-2, 6-2. Her win marks Wisconsin's only singles win of the day.

Senior Maria Avgerinos, junior Kelsey Grambeau and freshman Christina Zordani all started strong in their individual matches, winning their first set. However, they were all unable to maintain that momentum and each fell to their respective opponent in three sets.

After dropping the first set to Clemson's Ayan Broomfield, 6-4, sophomore Kendall Kirsch maintained a lead in the second stanza before she was forced to retire.

UW also struggled to advance in doubles play. Pick and Kirsch were the only triumphant pair of the day.

The duo lost their first match of the day to Central Florida's Cortney Cesarini and Monica Matias, 8-7 (1). Yet, they maintained a determined attitude to come back and defeat Oklahoma's Serena Nash and Julie Byrne, 8-6.

After a challenging day in doubles play, combos Zordani/Avgerinos and Sydney Rider/Grambeau will continue in the consolation bracket tomorrow.

Doubles play will begin at 9 a.m. (CT) on Saturday, followed by one round of singles.
