Wajda picks up win
NAPA, Calif. -- In the Wisconsin men's golf team's first match play rounds of the year, the Badgers fell to top-seed Southern California and fourth-seeded Colorado on the second day of the Gifford Collegiate at the Silverado Resort and Spa North Course.
Â
In the consolation semifinals, the Badgers fell to Colorado 4-1-1. Junior Eddie Wajda took down John Souza 1-up to give UW its first win after clinching the final hole. Sophomore Jordan Hahn tied his opponent in a back-and-forth round.
Â
"We had numerous opportunities to win the afternoon match so hopefully we learn from that," head coach Michael Burcin said. "Colorado is a top NCAA team and we had our chances but didn't capitalize."
Â
No. 6 Southern California beat the Badgers 5-0-1. Earning the tie was freshman Nick Robinson, who faced nationally-ranked Cheng Jin.
Â
"We had a day of maturing for our guys," Burcin said. "This morning we played arguably the best team in the nation and the guys competed hard. I'm especially proud of freshman Nick Robinson who tied a player who is in the top 20 in the world."
Â
The Badgers will learn their final opponent at the conclusion of the UCLA-South Florida match, which was suspended due to darkness. UW will face the losing team in the seventh-place match.
Â
"We will play another top team tomorrow and look forward to getting a win," Burcin said.
Â
Wednesday's final round is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. Live scoring can be followed at golfstat.com.
