Wisconsin splits games with USF

Badgers take dominant game one but fall in second game of doubleheader

TAMPA, Fla. -- After suffering two losses on the opening day of the USF Under Armour Showcase, the Wisconsin softball team came out with a fiery vengeance on the second day Saturday by taking the first game from South Florida, 9-5, but ultimately split in doubleheader action and dropped the second game, 10-2.

Senior Ashley Van Zeeland started the first game strong with a single to left field and the Badgers kept the momentum up. With sophomore Kelsey Jenkins on base from a walk, Chloe Miller shot a single up the middle to get UW on the board first, scoring Van Zeeland.

Junior Kirsten Stevens started in the circle and retired her first three batters with a fly out and back-to-back groundouts. Similarly, the Badgers went down in order the second inning, but USF responded in the bottom frame and took advantage of back-to-back errors by UW to tie the score, 1-1.

But the Badgers came back even stronger.

In her second at bat of the game, Jenkins was walked again giving Miller another prime opportunity with a speedy runner on base, and she took it. Miller blasted an RBI double to run up the score, 2-1, and forced USF to make a pitching change. Freshman Melanie Cross was walked after Miller advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior Macy Oswald put a sacrifice bunt into play to allow Miller to score and give the Badgers a 3-1 advantage through three innings.

A powerful Jenkins triple in the fourth inning gave the Badgers two more runs and a 5-1 lead with four innings in the books. The triple was the second of Jenkins' career, her first was late in the 2014-15 season against Iowa on April 12. It was also the third triple of the season for the Badgers who just registered 10 last season.

But Wisconsin took care of business and clinched the win with an explosive sixth inning that saw UW put up four runs off of three hits. Sara Novak came in to pinch hit for Brianna Flugaur and was hit by a pitch. Flugaur reentered to run and advanced on a wild pitch, before Gabby Scherle fired an RBI single to center field to get the offense going and the hits kept coming. After Van Zeeland was intentionally walked, Miller smashed her second double of the day to score Scherle and take a 7-1 lead. Freshman Melanie Cross took note and followed up with a double of her own upping the score to 9-1 with runs from Miller and Van Zeeland.

The Bulls started to rebound in the bottom of the seventh inning putting up three runs off of four hits the Badgers held them off and clinched the 9-5 victory, snapping a three-game skid.

Stevens collected her third win of the season after throwing all seven innings and allowing five runs off of nine hits. She struck out six and walked one in 35 batters faced.

UW wouldn't be so fortunate in the second game against USF, falling 10-2 in a run-rule loss.

Wisconsin started the scoring early again in déjà vu fashion when Van Zeeland led off with another single up the middle. Jenkins jacked a single to left field to put two runners on for UW. Miller cracked a double, her third of the day, to bring two runs in and take an early 2-0 start.

But those would be the only two runs Wisconsin would score, as USF's defense retired the next nine batters in a row. The Bulls got hit in the second inning, shooting the score up to 6-2 after notching six runs off of five hits and one error, including two home runs.

USF extended its lead to 10-2 in the bottom of the seventh by adding three runs off of three hits and one error. After just earning a run from a batter who singled and came home on a Badger miscue, the Bulls plated their remaining base runner when Lee Ann Spivey sent a home run out of the park to tally the final two Bull runs.

Senior Taylor-Paige Stewart took her third loss of the season after pitching 1.1 innings. She gave up six runs, five earned, and six hits. Mariah Watts finished the game and allowed six hits and four runs in 3.1 innings pitched.

Wisconsin returns to USF Stadium on Sunday for one final game in the USF Under Armour Showcase against UNLV at 8 a.m. (CT).
