Badgers travel to Indianapolis for Big Ten Tournament

BADGERS KICK OFF BIG TEN TOURNAMENT
Wisconsin is the No. 13 seed in the 2016 Big Ten Conference Tournament. The Badgers (7-21, 3-15 Big Ten) play No. 12-seed Northwestern (15-15, 4-14) on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. CT at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The winner of the game will advance to play fifth-seeded Minnesota (19-10, 11-7) in the second round on Thursday at approximately 1:30 p.m. CT.
    The Badgers are 10-21 in the Big Ten Tournament, advancing to the semifinals in 2002 and 2009. The Badgers lost and overtime game to Purdue in the first round in 2015, falling to 7-9 in opening-round games.

NOTES TO KNOW

1. PROTECTING THE BALL - The Badgers tied for second in the Big Ten in conference-only games with 12.72 turnovers per game. That figure ranks second on the UW season record list behind the 2010-11 mark of 12.44 giveaways per game.  
2. BAUMAN BOMB - Senior Nicole Bauman shot 6-of-8 from 3-point range at Maryland on Feb. 25 to move into second on the UW record list for triples made with 235. She also moved into fourth in 3-pointers attempted with 570. The senior continues to be the Badgers all-time leader in 3-point percentage at 41.6 percent.
3. JOHNSON COUNTING DOWN TO 1,000 - Redshirt senior Michala Johnson is only 34 points away from 1,000 for her career. The 6-3 forward has 966 points and is also on track to set the UW career record for field goal percentage. She is shooting 53.5 percent at Wisconsin.
4. HITTING FROM THE LINE - Senior Nicole Bauman is on track to break the UW season record for free throw percentage, shooting 90 percent (54-of-60) from the line. The senior has made her last 18-straight charity shots. The current record is 88.7 (63-of-71) set by Katie Voigt in 1995-96.
5. ONE TOUGH SCHEDULE - UW has one of the toughest schedules in the nation this season, ranking 19th for schedule strength by RPIRatings.com. The Badgers have the fourth toughest schedule in the Big Ten, ranking behind Ohio State (third), Illinois (11th) and Rutgers (15th)
6. HELPING HANDS - For the second straight year, Wisconsin has two players with 100-or-more assists on the season. Senior Nicole Bauman leads the team with 106 helpers while senior Dakota Whyte adds 105 dimes. The duo had 103 and 110 assists, respectively, last season.

ROAD STRUGGLES
UW failed to win a Big Ten road game for the fourth time in program history, going 0-9 on the road this conference season. Wisconsin finished the Big Ten season at 3-15, tying for the third-fewest conference wins in program history. The Badgers also won three Big Ten games in 2013-14, 2012-13, and 1989-90.
    The Badgers are 7-21 overall, which would tie for fourth for the fewest wins in a season. It is the fewest wins for a Wisconsin team since 2002-03 when UW was also 7-21.

CLOSE LOSSES
In 11 losses this season, the Badgers have been within single digits in the last quarter of play, including at No. 6 Maryland on Feb. 25.
        Wisconsin has also been within five points in the final period in five games, including the Feb. 14 game at Indiana.

BALANCED SCORING
The Badgers have had at least two players score in double figures in all 28 games this season.
    Wisconsin is 1-0 with five players in double figures, 3-7 with four players scoring 10-or-more points, 3-7 with three players in double figures, and 0-7 with two players in double digits.
    Seniors Nicole Bauman, Dakota Whyte and Michala Johnson all average in double figures with Bauman leading the way at 15.5 points per game. Whyte and Johnson add 12.9 and 11.8 points per game, respectively. Bauman has scored in double figures in a team-best 23 of 28 games, including five games with 20-plus points.

CAREER LIST UPDATES
Senior Michala Johnson is shooting 53.5 percent (383-of-716) from the field for her Badger career, which would go down in the UW record books as the No. 1 best shooting percentage. The current mark is 53.1 percent (741-of-1395) set by Barb Franke (1991-96).
    Senior Nicole Bauman ranks second on the UW career record list with 235 made 3-pointers. She needs 13 more triples to move into first, currently held by Jolene Anderson (2004-08) with 248. Bauman continues to lead the Badger career list in 3-point percentage at .412 (235-of-570). Bauman moved into fourth in career 3-point attempts with 570. She needs 35 attempts to move into fourth, a position currently held by Taylor Wurtz (2009-14) with 605 attempts.
    Bauman also ranks 19th on the career list with 1,219 points. She needs 11 points to move into 18th, a position held by Morgan Paige (2010-14) with 1,230 points.

I GOT THAT!

  • Senior Nicole Bauman picked up career point No. 1,200 and career assist No. 300 at Maryland on Feb. 25. She has 1,219 points and 310 dimes in her fourth season.
  • Senior Dakota Whyte reached 900 career points at Maryland. She has 920 points as a Badger.

COUNTING DOWN

  • Redshirt junior Avyanna Young is counting down to 600 career rebounds, needing 10 boards.
  • Senior Michala Johnson needs 34 points for 1,000 tallies.


SEASON LIST UPDATES
Senior Nicole Bauman is on track to break the UW season record for free throw percentage, shooting 90 percent (54-of-60) from the line. She has made her last 18 straight charity shots. Current record is 88.7 (63-of-71) set by Katie Voigt in 1995-96.
    Bauman has 75 3-pointers this season, which ranks third on the UW season record list. The 5-10 guard had 80 triples in 2014-15, which ranks second.  Bauman's 3-point percentage of .405 (75-of-185) would tie for sixth on the UW season-record list. She shot a Badger best 48.8 percent (80-of-164) last season. She also shot 42.5 percent (48-of-113) in Big Ten-only games, which ranks fourth all-time. Bauman shot a school record 50.8 percent (61-of-120) last year. Bauman's 48 makes ranks second on the UW conference season list behind her school record 61 triples last season.
    As a team, Wisconsin is averaging 5.43 3-pointers per game, which would rank seventh all time. The Badgers' 3-point percentage of .355 would tie for second all time. In Big Ten-only games, UW averaged 5.06 triples per game, which would tie for ninth all time. Wisconsin's 3-point percentage of .349 ranks eighth.
    UW has just 401 turnovers this season, needing to stay below 419 to record the fewest giveaways in a season. The Badgers are also averaging 14.32 turnovers per game, which would rank second all time.

BEST SEASONS OF THEIR CAREERS

  • Senior Nicole Bauman is averaging a season-best 15.5 points per game. She also has a season-high 25 blocks and 43 steals. The guard has taken and made the most free throws of her career (54-of-60).
  • Senior Tessa Cichy has a season-best seven blocks.
  • Senior Michala Johnson has a season best 32 blocks.
  • Sophomore Cayla McMorris is averaging a season-best 6.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. She is shooting a season-best 77.4 percent from the free throw line. McMorris has a season-best nine blocks and 13 steals.
  • Senior Dakota Whyte is averaging season bests of 12.9 points and 3.89 assists per game. She is shooting a season-best 34.6 percent from 3-point range and 75.7 percent from the free-throw line. She also has a season-best six blocks.
