MADISON, Wis. – A tough stretch for the Badgers continued Friday when the Wisconsin women's tennis team hosted second-ranked Ohio State.

The Buckeyes moved to 16-2 on the year with a 7-0 victory over the Badgers, who fell to 3-9 on the spring and 0-3 in Big Ten play following the match.

"As expected, we knew this was going to be a tough match playing the No. 2 team in the country," UW head coach Tina Samara said. "We felt prepared because of the schedule we've faced. I think the teams we've been playing this year have shown the difference is the little things. It's making first serves, making returns, or closing out games or closing out sets."

Ohio State got off to a quick start on the doubles courts by winning all three matches.

Ferny Angeles Paz and Sandy Neihaus teamed up to knock off Kelsey Grambeau and Lauren Burich, 6-3. Olivia Sneed and Francesca Di Lorenzo paired up to take down Sydney Rider and Ekaterina Stepanova, 6-2. Finally, Anna Sanford and Miho Kowase, who entered the match as the second-ranked doubles pair by the ITA, sealed the doubles point for the Buckeyes with a 6-3 victory over Lauren Chypyha and Kendall Kirsch.

On the singles courts, Wisconsin looked strong out the gates, but ultimately, the Buckeyes proved to be too much for the Badgers to handle.

Sneed got the ball rolling for Ohio State with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Grambeau. Sanford and Angeles Paz followed suite with 6-3, 6-2, and 6-4, 6-2 victories over Stepanova and Kirsch, respectively.

In addition, Miho Kowasse, No. 113-ranekd Niehaus and No. 3-ranked Di Lorenzo all picked up victories for the Buckeyes. Kowase knocked off Maria Avgerinos by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Niehaus defeated Lauren Burich, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7. Finally, Di Lorenzo handed Chypyha just her second loss of the season by a score of 7-5, 7-5.

"We were up 4-1 in two out of the three sets on Courts 4, 5 and 6 and 5-3 at 5 and we just didn't close them out," Samara said. "Chypys was serving up 5-4 against the third-ranked girl in the country in the first set. Those things are the differences, we got ourselves in these positions but we didn't capitalize.

"You don't get those types of chances very often against these level players and teams, and when you don't take them when they're there you'll end up losing."

The Badgers will be back in action on Sunday, March 20, as they begin a three-game road trip at Penn State. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m. (CT).
