Badgers fall in first of three-match road swing

UW falls to 3-10 on the year with a 4-3 loss to Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Wisconsin hit the road for the first time since January, but unfortunately experienced a similar trend on Sunday morning in University Park, Pennsylvania. In a back and forth match that lasted nearly four and a half hours, the Badgers (3-10) ultimately came up just short, falling by a score of 4-3 for the fourth time in the last five matches.

The Badgers recent struggles on the doubles courts continued Sunday morning as they dropped two of the three doubles matches, giving the Nittany Lions a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.

The duo of Ekaterina Blik and Samantha Tutelman knocked off Kelsey Grambeau and Lauren Burich, 6-1. Meanwhile, Devan McCluskey and Kimberley Surin teamed up to take down Lauren Chypyha and Kendall Kirsch, 7-5.

The sole victory on the doubles courts for Wisconsin came on court 2 where Ekaterina Stepanova and Sydney Rider paired up to defeat Jacqueline Zuhse and Katherine Whiteaway, 7-6.

"Not getting the doubles point is clearly a problem for us," said head coach Tina Samara after the match. "Getting that would definitely take some of the pressure off of us on the singles courts."

The Badgers then turned to the singles courts to try and pick up lost ground. Burich got the ball rolling for the Badgers by knocking off Whiteaway, 6-4, 7-5. In addition, after dropping the first set, Stepanova battled back to take down Blik, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.

After losing on courts 3 and 4, the Badgers needed victories on courts 1 and 5 to complete the comeback.

On court 1, Chypyha knocked off Surin by as score of 6-1, 7-6. But unfortunately, the Badgers weren't able to pick up the final victory on court 5 as Daria Sapogova took down Grambeau, 6-4, 6-2, clinching a 4-3 victory for Penn State.

"We're getting wins at 1 and 2 singles which you normally can't count on," added Samara. "When Katja (Stepanova) turned her match around we were in great shape as we were up a set at #1 and 4-1 at #5. We really need to spend some time and really evaluate who wants to step up on this team."

The Badgers will be back in action on Friday, March 25, as they continue their road trip at Iowa. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. (CT).
