SAN DIEGO – After winning the hammer throw on Friday at the Aztec Invitational, Wisconsin men's track and field thrower
Riley Budde placed second in the shot put and third in the discus on Saturday to highlight action for the Badgers.
Budde's shot put throw of 59 feet, 5 inches, matched Mario Cota Castro's winning mark in the invitational section, but Castro won the event as a result of having a better second throw. Budde's shot put mark ranks sixth in program history.
The Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, native was the top collegiate finisher in the invitational discus with a throw of 181-8 to place third in the event. The discus mark also earned Budde seventh on the school's all-time list.
After winning the hammer throw with a mark of 201-1 on Friday, Budde is one of three throwers in program history to be ranked in the top-10 in three different throwing events outdoors, joining Danny Block and Anders Holmstrom.
"In over 14 years of coaching, Riley is one of the hardest working kids I have ever worked with," assistant coach
Dave Astrauskas, who oversees the throwers, said. "He is the model student-athlete and every performance he had this weekend was well-deserved!"
Fellow sophomore
Josh McDonald was fifth in the discus with a throw of 174-7 and 11th in the shot put with a mark of 50-9 1/4.
In his outdoor debut for the Badgers, junior
Lorenzo Larry was third in the invitational 200 meters in 21.13 seconds and fifth in the invite section of the 100 meters in 10.57.
Fellow sprinter
Ryan Davis was fourth in the invitational section of the 400 meters, clocking in at 48.21, while placing eighth in the invitational 200 meters in 21.73.
Sophomore
Corbin Ellis was ninth in the invitational 400 meters, crossing the line in 50.07.
Sophomore Jake Wallenfang earned a clearance of 16-6 in the invitational pole vault to tie for fifth, while teammate
Tim Guthrie was 11th with a vault of 15-8 1/4.
Senior multi-event athlete
Zach Ziemek was 10th in the invitational section of the javelin with a toss of 181-0.
"Overall, it was a good week for the team," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Mick Byrne said. "We got some solid training in in fantastic weather here in San Diego and wrapped up the week with a low-key meet. It's still very early in the season, but we're pleased with how things went and can't wait to see how we improve."
Wisconsin has next weekend off before heading to Athens, Georgia, for the Spec Town Invitational, April 6-9.
