Wisconsin wraps up spring break trip with pair of victories
SAN DIEGO – Wisconsin women's track and field fifth-year senior Kelsey Card and junior Brenna Detra each won events during the final day of competition at the Aztec Invitational on Saturday in San Diego, California.
Card won the discus with an NCAA-leading mark of 194 feet, 7 inches, which is less than three feet shy of her Big Ten record of 197-4. Freshman Haley Showalter came close to breaking the school's top-10 list in the discus with a mark of 148-8.
Following her victory in the discus, Card finished runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 54-4 1/2. Two other Badgers earned top-10 finishes in the shot put, as Kennedy Blahnik placed seventh (46-11) and Banke Oginni was 10th (45-4 1/2).
Card ended the weekend with a trio of top-three finishes after finishing third on Friday in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 189-6, which ranks third in school history.
Detra capped off a stellar weekend in San Diego by winning the 400 hurdles after claiming victory in the open 800 meters on Friday. Detra's 400-meter hurdles time of 59.23 seconds ranks seventh in school history. She became the ninth in program history to break the one-minute barrier in the event and her time also ranks 14th in the country.
Senior Brianna Bower took fifth in the javelin with a mark of 153-11, while Danielle Weber was 12th (131-0) and Frankie Morris was 16th (121-4).
In the invitational pole vault, sophomore Taylor Amann tied for fifth with a clearance of 13-0 3/4.
Wisconsin has next weekend off before heading to Athens, Georgia, for the Spec Town Invitational April 6-9.Â
