Wisconsin claims trio of medals at Knecht Cup

Badgers open season with three podium finishes

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The Wisconsin women's lightweight rowing team earned a spot in the grand finals of each of the four events it competed in at the Knecht Cup on Sunday in West Windsor, New Jersey, beginning the spring season with a trio of third-place finishes.

The Badgers competed in the openweight eight events in addition to the lightweight eight and novice eight races, finishing third in each event among nearly 30 opponents.

"The Knecht Cup was a great opportunity for the lightweights to get several trips down the course, racing in both openweight and lightweight events," UW head coach Dusty Mattison said. "The focus was to use every race to go full-speed down the course and execute the best as possible and then learn from each experience and see what parts of the race we need to work on."

Wisconsin began the day with two big wins, as UW's A and B boats claimed first-place finishes in their respective heats in the varsity eight semifinals. The A boat posted the fastest time of any boat in the event, finishing the 2000 meters in just 6 minutes, 48.13 seconds, while the B boat finished with a time of 6:53.43 in its heat. The wins secured a place in the grand final for each boat.

In the first varsity eight grand final, Wisconsin's A boat turned in a 6:54.10 time to clinch third-place among six boats. The B boat came in fourth place in the second varsity eight grand final with a time of 6:56.51.

All three Wisconsin boats rowed in the lightweight eight semifinals. Among 14 boats, the Badgers' A boat earned a second-place finish in its heat behind Stanford, posting a final time of 6:47.84.

The B and C boats raced in the second heat, finishing third and seventh, respectively. The B boat, with its time of 6:59.10, advanced to the grand final, while the C boat was edged out from securing an additional race, posting a time of 7:28.17.

In the lightweight eight grand final, the Wisconsin A boat's 6 minute, 45.74 second time clinched a third-place finish, while the B boat finished sixth with a time of 7:00.37.

The Badgers rounded out the day with a third-place finish from their C boat in the frosh/novice eight event. After earning a second-place finish in its semifinal race with a time of 7:16.14, Wisconsin's 7:01.46 finish in the grand final earned a bronze finish behind Stanford and Alabama.

"I think the best quote from the girls at the end, after they had finished four races was, 'that was fun,'" Mattison said. "I think that this was a really great turning point for Wisconsin. I think a lot of teams noticed that we have picked up some speed and we're bringing Wisconsin back to where it should be.

"We still have work to do, we're not quite there yet, but we're definitely in the mix with those top schools."

The Badgers travel back east on April 16-17 for the Charles River Lightweight Invite in Boston.
