Badgers knock off Indiana for second straight win

UW takes down the Hoosiers in impressive 5-2 victory

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Wisconsin women's tennis team (6-12, 3-6) looks to have found their groove in the month of April as winning its second-straight match on Friday afternoon by knocking off Indiana (13-8, 3-4), 5-2.

"We are obviously very happy to get a win on the road today, especially since this was our first outdoor match of the season," said head coach Tina Samara. "It didn't come easy but I was proud of our grit and how we found a way to get it done."

The Badgers got out to a quick lead as they won two out of three doubles matches to win the doubles point. The two seniors, Lauren Chypyha and Lauren Burich, got the ball rolling early as they made quick work of Paula Gutierrez and Sarah McLean, 6-1. Kelsey Grambeau and Kendall Kirsch followed suit with a 6-2 victory over Danielle Wolf and Madison Appel.

In addition, Ekaterina Stepanova and Sydney Rider fell just short to Kim Schmider and Stephanie Smith, 6-4.

The Badgers turned to the singles courts to build upon their lead and that's exactly what they did. Burich led the way as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Schmider, giving the Badgers a 2-0 lead. However, the Hoosiers went on to tie it up at 2-all with victories on courts 3 and 4.

It was all Wisconsin from here though as Sydney Rider gave the Badgers a 3-2 lead by knocking off Danielle Wolf, 7-5, 6-4. No. 90 Stepanova responded to her first-career ranking by clinching the victory for the Badgers with a razor-thin win over Appel, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5).

In addition, No. 54 Chypyha picked up her fourth victory of the year over a ranked opponent as she took down No. 96 Gutierrez, 7-6 (4), 7-5, rounding out the 5-2 victory for the Badgers.

"Things finally seem to be clicking for us now," added Samara. "Burich got another point on the board quickly and it was great to see Sydney step up today as well. We knew we were in a good position with 1 and 2 singles on for the clinch."

The Badgers will be back in action on Sunday, April 17, as they head to West Lafayette, Indiana to take on Purdue. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
