MADISON, Wis. – Senior
Lauren Chypyha and sophomore
Ekaterina Stepanova have recorded a lot of big wins for the Badgers this season, but Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium might have been a career-defining day for both of them. Wisconsin's top two singles players took down one of the nation's toughest duo's, upsetting Michigan's pair of top-15 opponents.
Chypyha posted the highest-ranked win of her career, knocking off No. 14 Ronit Yurovsky. Chypyha's fourth win over a ranked opponent this season moved her to 26-6 on the year, including 10-3 in the spring. In addition, following today's victory, Ranked 54th in the nation, Chypyha is now tied with Cathy Van Pelt for fifth on UW's all-time career wins list with 91 career victories.
Stepanova picked up her first-career win over a ranked opponent, doing so in a big way with a 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 15 Brienne Minor. Stepanova is second on the team in wins, owning a mark of 9-5 during the spring dual season.
"I think to win at the one and two spots against two top-15 players in the country was awesome," said head coach
Tina Samara. "They both played well and it shows that all their hard work is paying off."
Also picking up a victory for the Badgers was
Lauren Burich, who took down Sara Remynse, 7-5, 6-3.
Unfortunately, those three singles wins were all the Badgers (4-11, 1-6) managed to pick up as No. 11 Michigan (11-4, 4-0) won the other three singles matches and picked up the doubles point, clinching a 4-3 victory.
Michigan's Minor and Kate Fahey, who entered the match as the 57th ranked doubles team by ITA, took down the duo of Chypyha and Burich, 7-5. In addition, the duo Alex Najarian and Mira Ruder-Hook took down
Sydney Rider and Stepanova, 6-4, while Yurovsky and Remynse handed
Kelsey Grambeau and
Kendall Kirsch their first loss of the season together, 6-4.
"I think last week we had some pretty good practices and talks about recommitment to what we felt we need to do to make April great and that's what we want is for April to be great," said Samara. "I think this is why we were competitive today.
"It's been a rough season for the team in terms of wins and losses but what we've been trying to tell ourselves is that there is a reason behind playing all these tough matches and if we commit to doing the right things, it'll end up paying off down the road."
The Badgers will be back in action on Sunday, April 3, as they host Michigan State at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
