SAN DIEGO – A day after breaking the Big Ten Conference discus record with an Olympic qualifying mark at the Chula Vista Throws and Vault competition, Wisconsin women's track and field senior
Kelsey Card broke the conference record again on Friday at the Triton Invitational.
Card's toss of 203 feet, 9 inches at the Triton Track & Field Stadium was an 18 inch improvement from her previous personal best of 202-3 that she threw on Thursday.
"It was another outstanding performance by Kelsey," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Mick Byrne said. "She continues to raise the bar and perform at a world-class level."
"Hitting the Olympic qualifying mark yesterday was the huge goal of the weekend," Card said. "Today, I wanted to go into it with a relaxed mindset. If it was good, it would be the cherry on top, and that's what happened."
Card finished third in the invitational section of the discus behind professionals Jade Lally and Whitney Ashley.
The Plainview, Illinois, native now leads the NCAA in the event by more than three feet as she's one of two collegiate throwers this year to throw over 200 feet. In addition, Card ranks second among American throwers and ranks 13th in the world.
"It's crazy to be in this spot," Card said. "But it also reminds me on how much more I want to improve and what we are working on and focusing on to move up those rankings."
Card wasn't the only Badger to find success in the discus, as redshirt freshman
Kennedy Blahnik had a toss of 165-9 to place ninth in the open section of the event. Blahnik's effort ranks fifth in program history and sixth in the Big Ten.
True freshman
Haley Showalter also cracked the school's top-10 list in the discus with a mark of 156-6, which ranks ninth in school history, while redshirt freshman
Hanna Barton's toss of 154-3 ranks 10th in UW annals.
Showalter also competed in the hammer throw where she took 18th with a toss of 178-7.
Up the coast of the Golden State, distance runners traveled to Stanford to compete in the first-ever Stanford Twilight.
A quartet of Badgers competed in the 5000 meters and all earned new personal bests as senior
Gabi Anzalone led the Badger charge. Anzalone took second in 16 minutes, 15.73 seconds, which ranks 10th in program history and second in the Big Ten this year.
Redshirt freshman
Shaelyn Sorensen fared well with a ninth-place finish in 16:21.79.
Junior
Michele Lee came in 11th in 16:34.13 and sophomore
Jamie Shannon finished 12th in 16:38.29.
The final day of the Triton Invitational starts on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. CT, while the UW sprinters will compete in Arkansas on Saturday afternoon at the John McDonnell Invitational.
