INDIANAPOLIS – The Wisconsin women's golf team sealed its best conference finish since 2011 on Sunday, tying for fourth at the 2016 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships at The Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis.
UW (-2, 289-290-283=862) picked the ideal time to register its lowest round of the season, as the Badgers went for a 5-under 283 in the third round. The team tied with Illinois (-2, 285-293-284=862) and was just three strokes back of Purdue (-5, 283-291-285=859) in third.
Â
Northwestern (-12, 284-286-282=852) and Ohio State (-12, 291-281-280=852) shared the tournament crown at 12-under. For OSU it was it's
third straight Big Ten title. Ohio State stormed back from ninth place after Day One and finished with a flurry to earn a conference-best 14th Big Ten crown since 1982 (next closest is Indiana with seven titles).Â
Brooke Ferrell (-7, 65-72-72=209) recorded her second-straight even par round on Day 3 to place third on the player leaderboard which tied her with Malinda Johnson (2003) and Laura Bleyhl (1994) for the second-best conference finish in school history. Her previous top placement at the Big Ten tournament took place during her freshman season in 2014 when she ended the event in fourth. She also earned All-Big Ten Championship honors.
Â
Over the course of the weekend Ferrell netted career-bests for 18 (65), 36 (137) and 54 holes (209). The junior's three-round scorecard also marked a new Wisconsin 54-hole record, outdoing the 211 she notched earlier this year at the Westbrook Spring Invitational. Ferrell now owns four of the top nine 54-hole outputs in UW history.
Â
Becky Klongland (-3, 74-71-68=213) golfed her way into the top 10 on Sunday, as she registered a 4-under 68 to tie for ninth. Like Ferrell, Klongland picked up 18- (68), 36- (145) and 54-hole (213) career bests. Her scorecard is also tied for the third-best three-round output in school history.
Â
Klongland's placement was a massive improvement from her tied-for-54th-place finish as a freshman last season.
Â
Sophomore
Gabby Curtis (+5, 72-75-74=221) finished in a knot for 35th. She was 5-over for the event which was one stroke more than her 54-hole total from the 2015 Big Ten championship where she finished tied for 13th.
Â
Michelle Cheung (+6, 78-75-69=222) put up her fourth under-par round of the season on Sunday, as she scored a 3-under 69. The Hong Kong native was 6-over overall, putting her in a tie for 39th—three spots behind her tied-for-36th-place finish from 2015.
Â
The Badgers' freshman competitors—Nat Zeng (+12, 78-72-78=228) and
Jessica Reinecke (+13, 78-75-76=229)—ended the weekend in a tie for 65th and knotted in 71st, respectively.
Â
Zeng tied an 18-hole career-low with an even 72 in Round 2, while Reinecke earned a career-best for 54 holes (229).Â
The Badgers will await news of an NCAA tournament berth which will be announced on Monday, April 25 at 6 p.m. ET on the Golf Channel.
