MADISON, Wis. – Seniors
Lauren Chypyha and
Lauren Burich have had a knack for pulling out exciting wins this season, so it's only fitting that in the regular-season finale, the Badgers did the same.
Wisconsin sent its senior duo off in style with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Maryland at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. In addition, Sunday's win guarantees Wisconsin a trip to East Lansing for the Big Ten Tournament.
Â
The excitement got started early after the Badgers split the first two doubles matches, leaving it to the third and final court to determine the doubles point. There,
Kendall Kirsch and
Kelsey Grambeau battled back after falling behind early to take a 6-5 lead over Nataliya Bredikhina and Caroline Williams. However, Bredikhina and Williams tied it up at 6-all and forced a tiebreaker.
Â
With their teammates and fans cheering them on, the Wisconsin duo went on to win the tiebreaker 7-5, clinching the doubles point with a 7-6 (5) victory for the Badgers. Â
Â
"I think the biggest thing today was getting the doubles point," said head coach
Tina Samara. "To have Kendall and Kelsey figure out how to get that win was huge. We talked all year about how important the doubles point is and today it really showed."
Â
With a 1-0 lead, the Badgers turned to the singles courts to extend their lead. However, the Terrapins came out firing.
Â
Hovsepyan and Tour gave Maryland a quick 2-1 lead with 6-3, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-0 victories over Kirsch and Grambeau, respectively.
Â
No. 89
Ekaterina Stepanova, who entered the match riding a six-match win streak, battled back after dropping the first set against Alexandra Stanova, to tie the overall match at 2-all with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory.
Â
Burich and Cassandre Thebault battled back and forth all match, but ultimately, Thebault came out on top with a 7-5, 7-6 (2) victory.
Â
Already down 3-2, the Badgers needed to win their final two matches in order to pull out a 4-3 victory and that's exactly what they did.
Â
On her senior day, 54th-ranked
Lauren Chypyha pulled out an impressive 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Arnelle Sullivan. Today's victory marks the 95th of Chypyha's career, which ties Barbara Urbanska for fourth on UW's all-time wins list.
Â
With the match now tied at 3-3, all eyes were on
Maria Avgerinos as she battled against Nataliya Bredikhina. After Bredikhina forced a third set, Avgerinos went on to clinch the 4-3 win for the Badgers with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 victory.
Â
"I don't say this very often but Maryland came out really impressively," added Samara. "Every player on their team just went after their shots and they weren't afraid. Early on it was a little dicey for us. At the two spot, Kate got beat pretty easily in the first set which doesn't happen very often and basically got hit off the court and I was thinking 'I'm not sure what we're going to do here.'
Â
"But no one quit and I just feel like we got help from everywhere. Sydney and Kate and then Kelsey and Kendall in doubles, Chyps pulling out that third set, Maria winning a third-set tiebreaker. Even the players who didn't win like Burr for keeping her match out there that long. That helps everybody that's still playing. Today was a lot of fun though and to me and Taylor (Braziel), it's the epitome of what college tennis can be and it's why coaches stay in this sport."
Â
Following today's win, the Badgers clinched a spot in the Big Ten tournament and their first match will take place on Thursday, April 28, in East Lansing, Michigan. Time and opponent is still to be determined.
