UW’s tourney ends with setback to top-seeded Ohio State

Badgers fall to Buckeyes 4-0 in Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Wisconsin women's tennis team's season came to an end Friday morning at the hands of top-seeded Ohio State (25-2, 11-0). The Buckeyes, who entered the match ranked No. 5 in the country, topped the Badgers 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Big Ten Tournament.

Wisconsin finishes the season with a record of 9-14 and a mark of 5-6 in conference play.

The Badgers got off to a slow start as Ohio State won the first two doubles matches to win the doubles point. The duo of Olivia Sneed and Francesca Di Lorenzo took down Kelsey Grambeau and Kendall Kirsch, 6-2, while Anna Sanford and Miho Kowase clinched the doubles point for Ohio State by knocking off Lauren Chypyha and Lauren Burich, 6-3.

On the remaining court, Ekaterina Stepanova and Sydney Rider were in a tight match with Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus, but abandoned their match at 3-all when Ohio State clinched the doubles point.

"We had chances to get the doubles point today," said head coach Tina Samara. "One court one we went up a quick break and we were in a good position at court two. But against a team at this level you have to take advantage of moments in sets and matches and we just weren't able to today.

"Ohio State is one of the best programs in the country. If we want to compete at this level, we will have to commit ourselves 100 percent moving into next year."

Down 1-0, the Badgers had a lot of ground to make up on the singles courts. However, the top-seeded Buckeyes proved to be too much as they never took their foot off the pedal and took the first three singles matches.

Kowase knocked off Kirsch, 6-1, 6-0. Kirsch finishes her impressive freshman year with a record of 18-16, and a mark of 5-8 against Big Ten foes.

No. 106 De Santis knocked off Maria Avgerinos, 6-1, 6-1, who finished with a mark of 11-18 on the year.

Ferny Angeles Paz rounded out the day for Ohio State with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Rider, clinching a 4-0 victory for the Buckeyes. Rider finishes the 2015-16 season with a record of 12-15.

In addition, 92nd-ranked Stepanova was battling it out with No. 110 Sanford but the match came to a halt at 3-6, 3-3 after Ohio State picked up the fourth and final point. Stepanova finishes her season with a record of 21-6 and a team-best 8-3 record in Big Ten play.

Due to a limited number of courts, seniors, Lauren Burich and Lauren Chypyha had to wait until courts opened up. Chypyha had just gotten started while Burich hadn't started when Ohio State clinched the fourth and final point.

Lauren Burich finishes her season with a record of 17-15, and finished her career with 61 career victories.

Lauren Chypyha, who owns a record of 30-7 and is ranked No. 56 in the nation, will now wait to see if she is selected for the NCAA singles championship. Chypyha currently sits at 95 career victories, which is tied for fourth on UW's all-time career wins list.

"I feel bad for our seniors," added Samara. "Because we played indoors, only four matches could be played at a time and the ones chosen were two, three, four and five. I wish they would've had a chance to end things differently. But I can't thank them enough for everything, they've been great for us and we'll really miss them."

In addition to those who played singles against Ohio State, Kelsey Grambeau finished the season with a record of 15-16 on the singles courts, while Nathalie Joanlanne finishes with a record of 7-6 and Caroline Hall finished with a mark of 8-3.
