MADISON, Wis. – Former Wisconsin men's rower Andy Weiland (Upper Arlington, Ohio) qualified for the senior team, while current Badgers in junior Nick Montalvo (Miami, Florida) and senior
Kyle James (Princeton, New Jersey) each made the under 23 team at the 2016 Senior, Under 23 and Junior World Championships Trials that took place this week in Princeton, New Jersey.
The 2016 Senior, Under 23 and Junior World Championships are scheduled for August 21-28 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Rowing on Mercer Lake, Weiland officially qualified for his fourth international appearance representing the United States after winning the uncontested men's lightweight straight pair on Wednesday. Weiland clocked 7:08.09 over 2000 meters to clinch the senior world championship bid.
Last year, Weiland raced in the lightweight four and won a silver medal at the 2015 Pan American Games. In 2014, Weiland placed fifth in the men's lightweight eight at the world championships. Weiland also competed at the 2012 World Under 23 Championships in the men's lightweight four, taking seventh.
That all followed a successful collegiate career at Wisconsin that included a second varsity eight title at the 2012 Eastern Sprints and a third varsity eight title at the 2011 Eastern Sprints.
Current Badgers Nick Montalvo and
Kyle James will each compete for the U.S. for the first time.
Montalvo, rowing for Craftsbury Sculling Center, teamed with Samuel O'Brien to cruise to a victory in the under 23 double sculls and grab their spot at the world under 23 championships. Their lightweight double sculls entry clocked 6:35.50, over 11 seconds faster than second-place Undine Barge Club's crew.
The under 23 lightweight double sculls showcased one of the largest margins of the day as Craftsbury Sculling Center's Montalvo and Samuel O'Brien posted a time of 6:35.50, 11.39 seconds ahead of the Undine Barge Club crew in the four-boat grand final.
James, rowing for Princeton National Rowing Association, won the under 23 lightweight men's pair along with John Gleim on Thursday to earn their spot. The duo timed 6:53.24 over 2000 meters to win the grand final. Six crews competed in the event.
"It's been my dream since I was really little to go to worlds and race for the U.S.," James said to USRowing. "The last time I raced here was for the University of Wisconsin at IRAs. It's fun to see the sculling clubs here and race different programs from around the country."
The trio will
join three Badger women's rowers in The Netherlands as former Badger Monica Whitehouse will row in the lightweight women's sculls at the senior championships, while two-time All-American lightweight Helena Randle qualified in the under 23 women's lightweight quadruple sculls and UW senior rower Maddie Wanamaker will compete in the under 23 women's quadruple sculls.
