Badgers assistant coach wins her third Cowles Cup
TUSCALOOSA, Ala.--Â Wisconsin softball assistant coach Danielle Zymkowitz helped the Chicago Bandits to their second-consecutive National Pro Fastpitch (NFP) title, defeating the USSSA Pride in a three-game series to claim the program's fourth Cowles Cup.
The series started rocky for the Bandits, as the Pride stole game one, 3-1, on Aug. 21. Zymkowitz, hailing from West Hills, California, recorded three chances at bat.
The following game, the Bandits stormed back to an 11-5 victory to force a third contest. Zymkowitz led all players with three hits, as well as scoring two runs in the win. She led off the fourth inning, which saw the Bandits score five of its 11 runs, while her fifth-inning double put her in position to add another two runs for her squad.
The teams squared off in a winner-take-all battle on Aug. 23, going scoreless through the first two innings. The Bandits, however, quickly took a 2-0 lead after cracking back-to-back solo home runs over the left field. The Pride hit a solo homer of their own in the fifth inning, but couldn't muster another run and fell to the Bandits, 2-1. Zymkowitz registered two at-bats, two putouts and a walk in the grand finale.
Recently named to the 2016 All-NPF Team, Zymkowitz finishes the season with a .307 batting average and 22 RBI, which both rank third among her teammates, while her 50 hits are the second-most on the team. Starting each of the 53 games she played in this season, Zymkowitz holds a .972 fielding percentage and 91 putouts.
Zymkowitz joined the Bandits in 2011 and has now won three NPF titles (2011, 2015, and 2016).
