UW drops to a tie for tenth place after slow start
College Grove, Tenn. -- A slow start and windy conditions set the Wisconsin men's golf team back in the second round of the FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove Golf Course in College Grove, Tenn.
The Badgers (295-297=592) finished the day at 9-over to move into a tie for 10th place.
Junior Eddie Wajda (73-71=144) shot a 1-under par 71 to move into a tie for seventh place and lead the Badgers. The Brookfield, Wisconsin, native is just four strokes off the leader.
"We got off to a really poor start but we came back and played pretty well on the back nine, really thanks to Eddie [Wajda]," UW head coach Michael Burcin said. "It was tough for everyone today though so we're still in it and can still finish the tournament well. I thought we finished today really well though all things considered."
After shooting another 1-over 73, senior Ben Skogen (73-73=146) sits in a tie for 13th place and sophomore Jordan Hahn (72-78=150) netted a 6-over 78 to slide into a tie for 43rd place. Junior Johnny Decker (77-76=153) improved upon his first round by shooting a 4-over 76 to be tied for 60th. At just one stroke behind, freshman Nick Robinson (77-77=154) is tied for 66th place after recording another 5-over 77.
Freshman Pete Kuhl (75-74=149), who is competing as an individual, netted a 2-over 74 to jump up the leaderboard and tie for 35th place.
In the team standings, just eight strokes separate fourth place from 12th place. Mississippi leads at +2 while College of Charleston (+4), Cincinnati (+7), Middle Tennessee State (+10) and Memphis (+11) round out the top five.
The final round of the FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove tees off on Tuesday at 8 a.m. Live scoring can be found at GolfStat.com.
"We really need to get off to a better start if we want to make a good run on the board tomorrow," Burcin said. "For the first three holes we don't necessarily need to get birdies but we need to get comfortable in the round and get some pars. If we did that today then we would be right in the middle of the tournament so we're eager to get back out there."
