Junior is crowned as consolation bracket champion

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Wisconsin's Kelsey Grambeau lost her first match of the Gopher Invitational. She would not lose again.

The junior bounced back from Friday's opening loss to win four straight matches and finish with a consolation bracket championship.

Grambeau met San Jose's Gaelle Ray in the B Flight consolation championship match, dispatching her in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, the Sydney Rider and Grambeau combo picked up another win, taking down North Dakota's Ella Hassall and Faith Lee, 6-2. Rider and Grambeau capped off an impressive weekend in which they went 4-1 overall.

"I'm incredibly thankful for the opportunity Kelsey and Sydney had to compete this weekend," head coach Kelcy McKenna said. "As we move forward into this week of practice, I think they both have a great understanding of the positives we want to take away from the weekend and build upon moving forward."

The Badgers will take the court next weekend in Evanston at the Wildcat Invitational.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.
– Wisconsin women's tennis players Sydney Rider and Kelsey Grambeau found success on the doubles courts on Friday at the opening day of the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Rider and Grambeau dispatched San Jose State's Tamara Colibrk and Diana Flament, 6-3 in the opening round of the Doubles A Flight. It was more of the same in the second round, when the combo topped Iowa State's Regina Espindola and Annabella Bonadonna, by the same score of 6-3.

Things came much harder in singles play for the Badgers. Both Sydney Rider and Kelsey Grambeau lost to strong competitors in the opening round, sending them to the consolation brackets.

"I think today we learned some valuable lessons," head coach Kelcy McKenna said. "Moving forward, it is imperative our decisions continue to evolve on court. Kelsey and Sydney did a nice job of competing in round two of singles and I look forward to watching them build on the momentum as we look to tomorrow."

Rider fell to Iowa's Anastasia Reimchen, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening round. In her second match of the day, she fought hard to beat Northern Iowa's Jieke Stroobant, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8.

Grambeau battled against Northern Iowa's Elvira Lopez in the B Flight, but came up short, 6-5, 6-3. She fought just as hard during her second match of the day, beating San Diego State's Molly Crum, 6-7, 1-6, 10-4.
