LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 18 Wisconsin wrestling team suffered its second Big Ten conference loss of the season at the hands of No. 6 Nebraska on Friday night at the Devaney Center. The Badgers (3-2 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) recorded three wins but the Huskers (8-1, 2-1) took the dual, 28-11.
"We didn't match up that well, we got beat to the punch in some of those matches," head coach
Barry Davis said. "We got ridden and there wasn't enough offense. We have to make some changes and get back to the mat and get ready for Sunday.
"There were three good wins and Ricky put himself in a position to win. We are going to make some changes on bottom. We have to keep our head up and get back in the wrestling room and work on some skills, we have to move forward."
Nebraska captured the first three wins of the night, but 149-pounder
Andrew Crone put a stop to the Huskers' streak in exciting fashion.
Trailing 4-1 early in the second period, he exploded in typical "Comeback Crone" fashion with a quick escape followed by a takedown and two nearfalls. With the lead now in his favor at the start of the third period, Crone held off Nebraska's Collin Purinton and added two escapes and a takedown to clinch the Badgers' first victory of the night, 10-6.
Third-ranked
Isaac Jordan was the next Badger to pick up a win at 165 pounds. The two-time Big Ten champ started strong tallying a takedown early in the first period and showed good control with plenty of powerful lift and returns. Nebraska's Dustin Williams escaped early in the second period, but Jordan held onto the 2-1 lead going into the third. Jordan fought and managed to slip out of Williams' grasp in the third and tacked on a riding-time point to finish off the bout 4-1.
Senior
Connor Medbery was the star of the show for UW, collecting Wisconsin's only bonus-point win of the night. Medbery attacked quickly, gathering a takedown and six total nearfall points in just the first period alone. He didn't falter in the second period, adding back-to-back four-point nearfalls and shutting down the match in 3:55 with a 16-0 tech fall.
No. 13
Ricky Robertson put up a tough battle in the biggest ranked matchup of the night against No. 7 Aaron Studebaker, but eventually lost a tight 4-3 decision. The junior rebounded back in the second period after trailing 2-1 and slammed Studebaker with a reversal. Studebaker eventually escaped in the second to knot the score at 3-3 headed into the final period, but another Studebaker escape seconds into the third period clinched the final match point for the Husker.
At 125 pounds, No. 20
Johnny Jimenez lost by tech fall (19-1) to third-ranked Tim Lambert. The Badgers dropped the next two as
Eli Stickley (133) fell by a 10-1 major decision to No. 3 Eric Montoya and No. 15
Cole Martin (141) also lost a major decision to No. 11 Colton McCrystal, 12-2.
The Huskers' third-ranked Tyler Berger defeated
Jarod Donar with a 14-4 major decision at 157 pounds.
Micah Barnes knocked off
Ryan Christensen with an 8-1 decision at 174 pounds, while
Jake Stilling succumbed to No. 3 Timothy Dudley, 16-0, at 184 pounds.
Wisconsin next heads to Minnesota for a 1 p.m. CT Border Battle at the Sports Pavillion on Sunday.
