Head coach Mark Johnson
On North Dakota's aggressiveness to start the game
"Usually on a weekend series, you lose that first game, you usually come out in the next game, especially in the first period, wanting, obviously, to change the scenario. So I was impressed, especially in the first eight or 10 minutes of the first period, the way we played. We did a better job of taking care of the puck, breakouts were a little cleaner than they were last night in the first period, and overall, besides the penalties, the referees start getting involved and the game changes flow-wise but it was a pretty good period."Â
On the challenges of the game
"I mean, they scored on the power play and you get to the second period, we talked about in between the second and third, it becomes a 20-minute game. Within those 20 minutes there is going to be a bunch of 50-50 battles and my message was to make sure that we tried to win as many as we could. If we outnumber them in those situations, the chances are that we are going to have the puck and you know, then you wait for an opportunity. Both teams after the first period, it was really tight, there weren't many shot attempts, each team probably had a few. We had three or four good chances in the second period but then it was going to come down to who got an opportunity and who got the power play and we capitalized on it. That was a matter of staying out of the box and doing what we had done up to that point and we were able to sustain that so it was a good game and we did a real good job in the third period of rolling up our sleeves, it's our sixth period in two days and both teams had to expend a lot of energy last night in the game, and equally today. So it was a good character builder for us."Â
On how the series will help the team down the road
"When you play good, quality opponents, and you get tested and you get challenged, you not only learn about yourself, but if you are successful, you come back next week and work on some things to become a better team. The nice thing about this weekend, the enjoyment is that you won both games but it forced us to play hard, it forced us to compete and do a lot of things that for the second half of the season we haven't had to do."Â
On how the team responded to a close-fought game
"Like I said, there were a bunch of 50-50 stuff going on in the third and if you look at it percentage-wise, we won a bunch of them. That gives you the puck and puts you in a position to maybe create some scoring opportunities, so we lost one defenseman in the first period and then we lost another one at the start of the third period so you're juggling things around and moving kids around, people are playing in spots they aren't used to playing. The determination and the competitiveness was high and it showed in the third period."Â
On both goals coming from second-chance opportunities
"We got good scoring chances and Syd (McKibbon) banks one off the goalie and makes it 1-0. They score a nice power-play goal and then, like I said, you weren't getting many opportunities so who was going to capitalize and we certainly capitalized ours in the third and we withstood what we needed to do."
On the overall weekend and moving forward
"The best part is that we won the game and so they'll be tired, they'll be bruised up but generally if you win those games, you're not as tired as much if you end up losing them. They're in a pretty good routine, obviously they are in good physical shape, they almost get a full day today because it's only 2 o'clock, so they get a good chunk of today off. They'll come back tomorrow and just be a normal student, no practice tomorrow, and then we'll start getting ready for Tuesday, it's a short week for us. They've grown up playing a lot of hockey, they've played multiple games on single days as younger players. They should be heading out of here with their heads up high and feeling good."
Sydney McKibbon
On if they were expecting that aggressive of a game:
"Yeah I think anytime we play North Dakota they give us a battle. They're a hardworking team and they like to be hard on the puck so I think we expect that every time we play them."
Â
On how a tight series like this will help the team down the road:
"I think it's huge. It's huge for our confidence and it's huge for us as a team because we know that we can beat teams like that and teams that are going to battle with us."
Â
On how she kept the team going with everything that transpired during the game:
"I think we just have to stay composed. Obviously the refs are going to call what they want to call and we can't get worried with how that's going. We just have to stay focused and stay playing our game because that's the only thing we can really control."
Â
On scoring goals after teammates went down:
"You never want to see a teammate leave the ice so we had to get a little bit closer and work a little bit harder when we were down a couple people."
Â
On scoring on second-chance opportunities:
"One of our focuses was to drive the net. They had a different goalie in today so we wanted to test her and try to get as many pucks to the net as we could."
Â
Jenny Ryan
On her overall thoughts of this weekend's series:
"It was definitely one of our tougher battles. We haven't been tested like that in a long time so it showed a lot of character for our team to stick with it and get a goal late in the third and keep the lead and fight through adversity today."
Â
On how the defense will regroup after a weekend like this:
"We're definitely all happy that we came out with two wins so that's kind of peace of mind moving forward. Right now we have a few girls in the training room. Everybody's going to have to work to get back to 100 percent after that but we'll just hope nobody got too injured."
Â
On how the special teams played throughout the weekend:
"We definitely had a lot more penalties today than we wanted to. Obviously some of those were out of our control but I think we are happy with how our special teams did. Obviously we got the power play goal in the third there. We let up a goal on the penalty kill but we didn't let up any other ones and we had probably close to ten penalties. Looking back percentage wise I'd say we are pretty happy with that."
Â
On the inconsistent calling and how that changes their game:
"You never know if you're pinning a girl whether they are going to see that as a roughing or a check or something. In those types of games you just have to be pretty careful with what you're doing. Is it really necessary that you follow through and kind of rub a girl off or can you stop and let that go. It's definitely a little bit of a mental game there. You have to really keep yourself in check and make sure you're not doing anything too far outside the lines."
Â
On playing at home three straight weekends:
"We love playing here and we had a lot of away games in the first half so it's really nice, especially with school starting, to be able to stay home for three weeks in front of a great crowd. Obviously that was a big factor in this weekend's games. The crowd obviously really gets us going. It's really nice to be home and not have to travel far and catch up on school work."
