IOWA CITY, Iowa — The first day of competition for the Black and Gold Premier concluded with a solid showing from the Badgers on the men's side, including a top mark in the weight throw and some outstanding performances to start the heptathlon.
 
Riley Budde collected yet another victory in his 2017 campaign, setting the facility record with a throw of 70 feet, 3 inches (21.41 meters) in the weight throw. That mark is just over a foot off of his personal best of 71-4 set two weeks ago at the Badger Icebreaker.
 
Senior Lorenzo Larry finished second in the 200-meter premier in 21.63, just two hundredths of a second behind the winner.
 
Junior Corbin Ellis put forth an excellent performance in the elite 600 meters to place second in 1:19.84.
 
The team of Oliver Hoare, Ryan Davis, Cooper Barth and Russell Sandvold brought home a second-place finish in the distance medley relay with a time of 9:56.66.
 
Rashid Coulibaly earned a personal best in the pole vault, coming in third with a mark of 16-2 ¾ (4.95m). Tim Guthrie placed fifth with a distance of 15-9 (4.80m) and Jacob Wallenfang took seventh with a leap of the same height.
 
Sophomore Alex Teague captured a victory in the 200 meters, sprinting to a time of 22.07 in the final to win his first collegiate event.
 
The Badgers also shined during the first day of the heptathlon, leading the way with the top three places.
 
Sophomore Trent Nytes collected a field-high 3,238 points after jumping a personal-best 23-4 1/2 (7.12m) in the long jump and leading the field in both the shot put and high jump.
 
Senior Brandon Mortensen trails Nytes with 3,128 points. Mortensen won the 60 meters with a personal-best 7.08, won the long jump with a mark of 23-7 1/4 (7.19m), and finished fourth in the shot put throwing a career-best 42-1 1/2 (12.84m).
 
Rounding out the top three is freshman Zachary Lorbeck with 3,117 points. Lorbeck was runner-up in the 60 meters with a time of 7.09, ranked third in the shot put throwing 42-6 (12.95m) and also placed second in the high jump with a personal-best 6-8 ¼ (2.04m). 
 
Fellow freshman Paul Afflitto will go into Saturday's events in fifth place with 2,895 points after taking third in the 60 meters with a time of 7.10.
 
Isaac Hale delivered a personal record in the high jump with a distance of 6-7 (2.01m) to take third in that event, and leaves Friday's competition in eighth place with 2,725 points.
 
The Badgers will be back in action bright and early Saturday morning with the 60 meter hurdles starting off the day's slate at 10 a.m. (CT) for the heptathlon.
