Americans win shootout after overcoming pair of two-goal deficits to Canada
Game Summary
MADISON, Wis. – With a squad made up of skaters from all over the United States, the majority from the ranks of college hockey, Wisconsin sophomore forward Luke Kunin captained Team USA to gold at the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship on Thursday night in Montreal.
The Americans fell behind 2-0 to Canada in the first period, tied the game in the second, fell behind 4-2 in the third period, but battled back and got the game to overtime at 4-4.
A scoreless 20-minute overtime led to a five-round shootout, where Denver's Troy Terry scored the lone goal and goaltender Tyler Parsons made all five stops to put the Americans on top for gold.
Kunin, who finished the tournament with two goals and two assists, became the fourth Badger to bring home a medal back to Madison as Team USA captain since 2010.
In addition to Kunin this year, Jake McCabe captained the team to gold in 2013 and Derek Stepan did the same in 2010. Also, John Ramage served as captain in 2011 and helped the squad win bronze.
With the U.S. winning just four World Junior Championship gold medals since the annual event officially began in 1977, three of the four have had a Badger as captain.
A Badger was not the team captain when USA won its first-ever World Junior Championship gold in 2004, however then-UW head coach Mike Eaves was Team USA's head coach.
The U.S. owns 10 medals in the event all time.
The gold-medal winning Americans finished the tournament a perfect 7-0-0, going 4-0-0 in pool play, then advancing past Switzerland in the quarterfinals, Russia in a shootout in the semifinals, then Canada in a final shootout for the title.
