Fans have first look at 2017-18 wrestling team on Thursday night

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin wrestling fans had their first look at the 2017-18 squad on Thursday night as 24 wrestlers made their season debuts. The red team ultimately prevailed over the white team, 42-19.

Gabriel Grahek and Luke Rowh got things started in the 149-pound class. Grahek had an escape early in the second period to give him a 1-0 lead that he would hold onto until the end for the Red team's first win of the night.

Twenty-nine seconds into the third period, Zander Wick pinned Patrick Spray (149) to give the White team its first victory of the night.

Junior Ryan Christensen won by tech fall over true freshman Jackson Hemauer, 16-0, registering eight nearfall points.

Freshman Jacob Covaciu won by injury default over Izaec Quintanilla,

Tyler Shilson won by injury default at 149 pounds over Devin Bahr.

Senior Eric Peissig won a decisive major decision at 197 pounds over Jake Stilling with four nearfall points, ending with a 10-2 victory.

At heavyweight, Ben Stone had a dominant win finishing with a 17-2 tech fall over Ian Dretzka.

Ricky Robertson (184) started his senior campaign with a bang, defeating Brady Wetter by tech fall, 16-0.

It took three overtime periods, but Michael Cullen came out on top with a 3-2 victory over Jens Lantz at 133 pounds.

At 141 pounds, Cole Martin pinned Eli Stickley at 6:08 to earn another victory for the red team.

Andrew Crone and Jared Scharenbrock wrestled a tight and exciting match at 157 pounds but a late takedown and four nearfall put Crone ahead with a final 12-7 decision.

The match that followed was another exciting one as Hunter Ritter narrowly defeated Mason Reinhardt 5-3 at 197 pounds.

Wick and Grahek met up in the 149-pound finals match and Zick won a 6-0 decision.

Christensen and Covaciu met up in the 174-pound finals. Christensen had a 1-0 edge after escaping at the start of the second period and held onto that lead for the win.
