MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin women's soccer team managed to get off 20 shots Sunday afternoon against Indiana. However UW and IU found themselves at a 0-0 draw in double overtime at the McClimon Complex.
Opportunities presented themselves for Wisconsin (9-3-2 overall, 3-2-2 Big Ten) with the Badgers putting nine shots on goal by the end of the game against Indiana (5-7-3, 1-4-2).
Freshman forward Cammie Murtha looked as though she was ready to break the tie in the first overtime period when she ripped a shot to the upper-right corner in the 99th minute. Unfortunately Indiana keeper Bethany Kopel was able to punch the ball out of bounds.
Wisconsin outshot Indiana in three out of the four periods Sunday. The Badgers also ended with the advantage in corner kicks, 7-6.
It was a successful match for Wisconsin senior
Caitlyn Clem, who on Senior Day notched four saves and posted her sixth shutout of the season.
Becca Harrison was also celebrated pregame alongside Clem. The two have combined for 45 wins in their Wisconsin career.
Straight from the pitch:
Head coach Paula Wilkins
On playing to a scoreless tie:
"I think we created enough chances to win this game. I think that's the game of soccer a little bit, you create enough chances and they don't go in. Their goalkeeper made two or three good saves and two or three off the line. That's the way soccer goes."
On seniors Caitlyn Clem and Becca Harrison:
"Credit to them to lead this group right now. It's such a young group of kids that they're leading. I think they're doing a fabulous job with that. We wish we could have gotten the result for them on this day But like I told them, I'm happy with the shutout because we hadn't had one of those in a while."
On preparing for Illinois and Penn State:
"Illinois is the first thing, we're going to focus on them. What I said to the group is that we need to be a little bit better in the box and a little bit better moving the ball to create some opportunities so we can score."
