Pettet, Norby score to lead UW to 16th-straight triumph

ITHACA, N.Y. – Thanks to goals from Brette Pettet and Presley Norby, the top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over No. 7 Cornell on Saturday at Lynah Rink.

After a scoreless first period, Pettet put the Badgers on the board with her fifth goal of the season, shooting a laser past Cornell (3-3-0, 3-1-0-0 ECAC) goaltender Marlene Boissonnault 6:30 into the first period. Abby Roque and Lauren Williams picked up assists on the first tally of the game.

Norby scored the game-winning goal off a rebounded save from Boissonnault with six minutes left to play in the third to seal the Badgers 16th win of the season.

Three notes of the game

UW's 16-0-0 start is the second-best start in school history, as only the 2015-16 team enjoyed a better start (18-0-0).
Sophomore Kristen Campbell made 26 saves to improve to 16-0-0 on the season. Campbell, the reigning WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, has a NCAA-leading .94 goals-against average while her save percentage of .951 ranks first nationally.
Saturday's win marked UW's sixth-straight against a ranked opponent and UW's third-straight sweep of a ranked team. UW swept then-No. 6 Minnesota on the road on Oct. 28-29 before earning a sweep of then-No. 4 Ohio State last weekend at LaBahn Arena.

Play of the game
Once again, the UW penalty kill was stellar as the only goal the Badgers gave up on the penalty kill the entire weekend was when the Big Red had its goalie pulled and UW had two players in the box with 12.1 seconds remaining in the finale period.

Straight from the rink
Sophomore Presley Norby:
On her goal:
"I had just hopped over the boards and Alexis (Mauermann) and Sam (Cogan) were digging in the corner and forechecking hard and Sam put a nice shot low on the pad and it popped out right in front of me. They made it pretty easy for me."

On importance of a gritty win on the road:
"It's good for us to have some adversity and to play tough teams like Cornell. It only makes us better. It only makes us stronger for the rest of the season."

Freshman Brette Pettet
On her goal:
"Abby Roque made a really nice pass to me and I was able to go in and use their defense as a screen. All around I think my line contributed really well."

On the bye week:
"I think the whole week will be really tough conditioning wise and battling, which is good for us. I think it's a good opportunity. We have to make sure we're in shape, and we have to improve on some stuff so we don't have to be tired for the weekend."

Head Coach Mark Johnson:
On sweep on the road against a ranked team:
"Well the big picture is that these type of weekends make us compete at a real high level. Obviously being on the road and in a hostile environment, whether you end up winning or end up losing, you end up becoming better from it. It was a good weekend with a lot of good things in both games. We got into situations that we hadn't seen before in our first fifteen games. It was a fun way to win both."

On the penalty kill:
"It was good. On their (Cornell) power play, they move the puck around and created opportunities. You look at the boxscore today and most of their shots were on their power play. Five-on-five, we were pretty good today. Six-on-three for well over a minute, they're going to get some things and I thought [Kristen] Campbell did a great job and blocked several shots to prevent them from scoring till late in the game. It was good."

On next week's bye:
"We're a little banged up right now, so the bye week comes at a really good time. We'll be able to take some time and relax a little bit. It's important to heal up."

UW will be off from competition next weekend before heading to Washington D.C., Nov. 24-25, to take on Northeastern and Boston University.
