Badgers drop road contest at Purdue, 57-35

Laszewski and Fredrickson tally double digits

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Wisconsin women's basketball team was unable to rally back from a tough second quarter and fell to Purdue at Mackey Arena, 57-35, on Sunday afternoon.

Despite starting hot in the first quarter and just being narrowly outscored 12-10, the Badgers (7-8 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) fell behind after the Boilermakers (10-6, 1-1) posted 19 points in the second quarter compared to UW's two. Purdue stayed hot in the third quarter, adding 20 points to Wisconsin's nine. The Badgers closed out the game outscoring the Boilermakers 14-6 in the fourth but it wasn't enough.

Wisconsin started strong, responding quickly to every Purdue basket in the first quarter and not letting them get ahead by more than two points until the Boilermakers took a four-point lead (12-8) with 1:20 remaining in the quarter. The Badgers even captured a four-point lead (8-4) for themselves with three minutes left in the quarter after a 4-0 run that consisted of a Courtney Fredrickson drive in the paint and an outside jumper from Marsha Howard.

However, Wisconsin's lone basket of the second quarter came from Abby Laszewski at the 8:57 mark before Purdue ignited an 18-0 unanswered run to take a 31-12 lead at halftime.

The Badgers finished strong with a 12-0 run to close out the game and held Purdue without a field goal for the last nearly eight minutes but it wasn't enough as UW dropped its second conference game of the season.

Laszewski led Wisconsin with 12 points and was joined in double figures by Fredrickson, who put up 10. Howard led the team with seven rebounds but Laszewski and Fredrickson were not far behind with five and four, respectively.
