Sophomore set conference record, logged five automatic NCAA times in Texas
MADISON, Wis. – An outstanding performance at the Texas Invitational earned Wisconsin's Beata Nelson picked her second Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor of the season from CollegeSwimming.com.
Nelson's performance at last week's meet in Austin, Texas, was historic. She won three individual events (100-yard backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley) and recorded automatic NCAA qualifying marks in a total of five races, all while competing against some of the country's top swimmers.
The sophomore's time in the 100 back (50.79) broke the Big Ten record, besting Indiana's Brooklynn Snodgrass' 2014 time of 51.05. Nelson's 100 back effort was the second-fastest swim in the country this year.
Nelson's record-shattering meet also featured a school record in the 200 IM (1:55.16) and No. 2 all-time UW marks in the 200 back (1:51.21), 100 fly (51.82) and 200 fly (1:57.48).
In addition to leading the league in the 100 back, Nelson ranks second in the Big Ten in the 200 back, 100 fly and 200 IM, as well as helping UW stand second in the 400 free relay (3:15.38) and 800 free relay (7:05.06).
"I think the cat's out of the bag now. Beata is really good," said Wisconsin head coach Whitney Hite. "We've known that for a while now, and I'm very proud of her.
"She's in a good spot. She's fit, she's strong, she's motivated — and she's just going to keep getting better."
