Wisconsin’s rally comes up short at Butler

Badgers fall to Bulldogs 69-62 in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Wisconsin women's basketball team couldn't muster enough offense to complete the comeback Friday night in Indianapolis. The Badgers (6-5) started slow against Butler (6-4) shooting just 27.8% in the first quarter and never recovered in a 69-62 loss at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Wisconsin trailed by as many as 13 midway through the second quarter, before cutting it to a six-point deficit at the half. In the fourth quarter, the Badgers would tighten things up once again with some big buckets. With 7:41 left in the fourth quarter, Cayla McMorris came up with a huge block that set up a deep 3-pointer from Suzanne Gilreath. On the next Badger possession, Roichelle Marble hit a 3 with 6:42 left in the game, pulling the Badgers within one point, 51-52. However in the final minutes, Butler hit four of its last five shots to secure the home win.

McMorris led the Badgers with a double-double, posting 20 points (7-18) and 10 rebounds. Gilreath also had a productive night going 6-for-11 from the field with 17 points and three assists.

Butler was led by center, Tori Schickel who scored 19 points on 8-15 shooting from the field, to go with 10 rebounds and four assists.

For the game, Butler shot 42 percent (25-of-60) from the field while the Badgers shot 38 percent (25-of-66), but the game came down to points off the turnover. Butler tallied 14 points off nine Wisconsin turnovers that ultimately kept the Badgers from completing a late comeback.

UW struggled with fouls, committing 16 personal fouls to Butler's six fouls in the loss. Marsha Howard and Roichelle Marble had foul trouble throughout the game, allowing Butler to shoot 10 more free throw shots then the Badgers, going 11-for-14 from the charity stripe.

Straight from the Court:
Head coach Jonathan Tsipis
On the First Half
• "After the start, I thought we battled back and put ourselves in a position to complete. We came out to a 9-0 deficit, we had to call a timeout and settle in. Suzanne Gilreath came in and made a couple really big shots to calm us down.

On the Second Half
•  "The tale of the second half was we didn't rebound like we did in the first half and they got extra possessions. They were able to have a tied quarter when they went 5-20 because we gave up 12 offensive rebounds in the second half."
• "I'm proud of how our kids fought and we spread it around."

On Cayla McMorris
• "I thought Cayla battled through things, she didn't have her best shooting night, but found a way, got on the glass, got to the free throw line."

On Savannah State
• "No offense to Savannah State, but I wanna figure out how to fix us, and be better and not have the tale of two halves from a defensive rebounding standpoint especially. We will look at this and start getting ready for them. My staff has it already prepared and we will get right to work once we get off the plane in Madison."
