AMES, Iowa – The Wisconsin men's track and field team continued on their journey toward the Big Ten Indoor Championship with some impressive performances during day one of the Iowa State Classic.
Riley Budde continued to rack up top marks in the weight throw with a second-place finish in the event on Friday afternoon. The junior reached a mark of 70 feet, 8 inches, (21.54 meters) earning Budde his ninth top-two finish in all nine events he has competed in this season. Freshman
Tucker Wedig had a distance of 56-0 1/2 (17.08m) in the event.
In his first indoor race since 2015, senior
Malachy Schrobilgen scraped off the rust with an inspiring run during the 5000 meters. Schrobilgen finished second in the event, crossing the finish line with a time of 14:12.63. Just behind him in fourth was freshman
Benjamin Eidenschink, coming in at 14:13.91 with a great race of his own.
Freshman
Rashid Coulibaly continued to improve in the pole vault, setting a new personal best for the fourth straight meet in a row. Coulibaly finished with a third-place result in the event after leaping to a height of 16-6 3/4 (5.05m).
Tim Guthrie tied for fifth, hitting a mark of 16-0 3/4 (4.90m), while Jake Wallenfang took ninth with the same mark.
On the other side of the track, another freshman compiled an exciting performance in the long jump.
Zach Lorbeck reached a length of 22-11 3/4 (7.00m), crushing his personal record by over eight inches on the way to a fourth-place finish.
Lorenzo Larry qualified for the finals of the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.86 in the preliminary race before taking sixth in the contest with a run of 6.80.
In the men's 200 meter dash, freshman
Alex Teague displayed his best race in a UW uniform with a run of 21.64, taking eighth in the event. Larry followed up his race in the 60 meters with a time of 21.78 while placing 11th in this competition.
Freshman
Olin Hacker set his own personal record in the 3,000 meter invitational with a time of 8:06.10. Hacker finished in second during his heat and wound up in 12th overall in the event. Senior
Russell Sandvold broke his own previous best with a run of 8:08.79.
The Badgers will begin day two of the Iowa State Classic tomorrow with field and running events at the Lied Recreation Center at Noon (CT).
