Badgers flex muscles on Milwaukee

Veteran leadership gives Wisconsin a lift in 6-1 win

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's tennis team ran its home record to a perfect 4-0 on Friday night with a 6-1 win over Milwaukee. The Badgers (4-5), who returned to Nielsen Tennis Stadium after four straight road matches, looked sharp from the opening serve and cruised on all but one court.

Wisconsin opened the match by flexing its doubles muscles. Sydney Rider and Kendall Kirsch improved to 5-2 together this spring with a tidy 6-1 win on court three. Maria Avgerinos and Melissa Pick then clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 triumph at the No. 1 spot.

Avgerinos and Rider were just getting warmed up. The two seniors were in complete control at the top and bottom of the singles lineup. Avgerinos dispatched Labina Petrovska, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Rider took down Nicole Clarke, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6. Rider is now 4-2 in dual matches.

"We've had some tough losses, so I think today was kind of a building block win for us," senior Sydney Rider said. "We need to get some confidence again. I think Maria pulling out a match quickly and then me and Kelsey getting wins shortly after was a big lift."

After a contested opening set, Kelsey Grambeau found her groove in the second frame, blanking Eszter Zador for a 6-3, 6-0 win.

Kendall Kirsch and Michelle Linden took similar paths to victory on Friday. Kirsch gutted out a tight match on court four, topping Alysa Straub, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Moments later, Linden finished off her own lengthy first set before running away from Hayley Marshall at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

"What Kelcy (McKenna) and Megan (Falcon) stress is locking in and focusing every point and not get out of that mental frame," Rider explained. "We've shown that we can do it and we're pretty successful when we do. We're taking each match as a learning experience, trying to get better every time out."

The Badgers will return to action for the start of Big Ten play next weekend when they travel to Minnesota on March 4.
