Senior earns first conference weekly honor after stellar weekend
MADISON, Wis. – For the second week in a row, the Wisconsin softball pitching staff has earned a Big Ten weekly honor. Senior Kirsten Stevens earned her first career weekly conference accolade, the league announced Monday.
The senior showed composure in the circle all weekend at the 2017 FGCU/Four Points Softball Invitational at Florida Gulf Coast University, tallying not only two wins but two shutouts. She led the Badger defense to shut out Florida International University, who is receiving votes, 5-0, and Hofstra, 4-0.
Stevens clinched her third shutout of the season after dealing a career-best 11 strikeouts against Hofstra. Stevens led the Badgers to their third shutout of the year over FIU after recording five strikeouts.
The Crystal Lake, Illinois native is currently sporting a 0.28 ERA with four triumphs in the circle. Steven is holding batters to a .172 batting average while collecting 32 strikeouts in five games.
This is the 15th pitcher of the week honor for the program and the first since former Badger and current volunteer assistant coach Taylor-Paige Stewart took home the accolade in 2014.
