Clark, Roque lead Badgers to 500th program win

Duo lead No. 1 Wisconsin to milestone victory against Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Emily Clark and Abby Roque each scored twice to lead the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team to a 6-1 win, the program's 500th triumph, against Bemidji State on Friday afternoon at the Sanford Center.

The Badgers became the 10th program in NCAA Division 1 women's hockey to garner 500 triumphs and the second school in the WCHA to accomplish the feat.

"It's a reflection of what's gone on for a long period of time," UW head coach Mark Johnson said. "We have good support from our fans, good players, good commitment from a lot of different people and it's something to be very proud of as a group."

"It's pretty cool to be part of a program with so much history," Clark said. "To be able to be part of that milestone is pretty special."

The Badgers scored five or more goals on Friday for the 12th time this season as UW leads the country in scoring, averaging 4.14 goals per game.

"I think what helps is that the whole team is unselfish," Roque said. "Everybody wants to move the puck, there's nobody who wants to take it by themselves. So by moving the puck and getting it around we create scoring opportunities and we get a lot of goals."

Clark ignited the offense just seconds after puck drop, tipping in a shot from junior Annie Pankowski to get the Badgers on the board first.

The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, native doubled the lead a few minutes later after picking up her own rebound and stuffing it past BSU goaltender Brittni Mowat for her 12th goal of the year.

Roque rounded out scoring in the first frame, collecting her fifth goal of the year after roofing a backhander past Mowat.

Bemidji State scored its lone goal of the contest as Emily Bergland found the back of the net before the first period expired.

Wisconsin responded in the second as Roque found the scoresheet again, tallying the lone goal of the period when she caught Mowat out of position and slid the puck past the goal line to put the Badgers up 4-1. UW outshot Bemidji State 20-6 in the second frame.

Heading into the final 20 minutes of play, senior captain Sydney McKibbon joined in on the scoring fun after redirecting a shot from the point to earn a power-play goal. Wisconsin has now scored a power-play goal in six-straight games and ranks fourth nationally with a player advantage.

Sophomore Sam Cogan closed out the offensive attack, burying a rebound from a Presley Norby shot to conclude Wisconsin's six-goal effort.

Wisconsin outshot Bemidji State on the day while the Badgers were 1-on-2 on the power play.

Roque ended the day with three points, while Sarah Nurse also earned three points thanks to a trio of assists.

"I just think the lines were passing really well with me," Roque said. "My two linemates did really well getting the puck and moving it around, so opportunities just kind of came."

Ann-Renée Desbiens stopped 27 of the 28 shots she faced to earn her 91st career victory, which moves the senior into a tie for second in school history for career wins with Jessie Vetter.

UW and Bemidji State wrap up their series on Saturday at 3 p.m.

"They're still battling for positioning in the standings so they'll come out hard," Clark said. "They played all the way through today so I expect nothing less tomorrow."
