IOWA CITY, Iowa – Wisconsin wrestling senior captains
Isaac Jordan and
Connor Medbery continued their winning ways on Friday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, both tallying wins against tough Iowa opponents.
The No. 3 Hawkeyes (9-2 overall, 5-1 Big Ten) recorded five bonus-point wins and three decisions to rout the Badgers (3-5, 1-5) 33-8.
"We're going through a tough stretch but we're at where we're at, so we've got to sit together and control our minds," head coach
Barry Davis said. "You've got to control that mind and we've got to go in the other direction here, and we will. I told the guys, 'I had my struggles, I've been through it. I get it guys, but here's how you come back and here's what you do.' We've got to go back tomorrow and get back in the weight room and move forward to get ready for Purdue next Friday."
Second-ranked Medbery was the first Badger to clinch a victory and he did so in dominant fashion over Brantley Farran at heavyweight. He jumped out to a quick start in the first period, tallying two takedowns and two nearfall for a 6-1 advantage headed into the second. It took him just seconds to notch another takedown at the start of the second and grabbed a pair of two nearfall points at the end to take a 13-1 lead into the final period. He finished it off within the first minute of the third period with a final four nearfall points to grasp the 18-1 technical fall.
Third-ranked Jordan (165) won the only other bout of the night for the Badgers in an exciting sudden victory match. After a scoreless first period, Jordan's opponent Joseph Gunther slipped out of his tight grasp after one minute in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Jordan followed suit 20 seconds into the third period and escaped, tying the bout at 1-1. The score would remain knotted forcing the two into sudden victory where Jordan came out on top, taking Gunther down with a single-leg shot.
At 197,
Mason Reinhardt battled Cash Wilcke tough in his first-ever dual start. The two went scoreless through the first period but Wilcke took a 1-0 lead in the second with an escape. Reinhardt held him to that until one minute into the final period when Wilcke took him down. Reinhardt managed to escape less than 20 seconds later but couldn't jumpstart on offense and dropped the tight 3-1 decision.
Both
Andrew Crone (149) and
Eli Stickley (133) lost tight decisions to their Hawkeye foes. Stickley fell by a 6-2 decision to Phillip Laux. Crone hung tough with fourth-ranked Brandon Sorensen but eventually succumbed with a 9-5 decision.
