MADISON, Wis. – Seven members of the Wisconsin women's swimming team are officially set to compete in individual events at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
Badgers
Maria Carlson,
Dana Grindall,
Chase Kinney,
Beata Nelson,
Cierra Runge,
Jess Unicomb and
Danielle Valley were among the selections released by the NCAA.
The national meet is scheduled for March 15-18 and will be held at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
After finishing 21st in the team standings at last year's NCAA championships, the Badgers look poised to improve their finish, having qualified in 17 of 18 possible swimming events.Â
Runge, Valley and Nelson each qualified to compete in three individual events, the maximum swimmers are allowed to compete in.
Runge will swim in three events in which she holds school records: the 200, 500 and 1,650-yard freestyle.
Nelson is listed to compete in the 100 butterfly and the 100 and 200 backstroke.
Valley will show off her versatility as she joins Runge in the 500 and 1,650 free races, while also representing Wisconsin in the 400 IM, an event in which she set the school record at the Big Ten championships.
Carlson is set to compete in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and Grindall will swim in the 100 and 200 fly races.
Sprint freestyle specialist
Chase Kinney will hit the water for the 50 and 100 free, and
Jess Unicomb will join Nelson in the 100 and 200 backstroke events.
In addition, all five of the Badgers' relays will compete at the NCAA championships after securing automatic qualifying marks at the conference meet.
Emmy Sehmann,
Abby Jagdfeld and
Marissa Berg are also expected to make the trip to the Hoosier State after contributing to the Badgers' dominating relay performances at the Big Ten meet.
Divers
Alexandra Hafey,
Hazel Hertting and
Ashley Peterson also have a chance to make it to the national stage as they will compete at the NCAA Zone Diving Meet in Columbia, Missouri, next Monday through Wednesday.
The men's psych sheets are set to be released next week by the NCAA with their national meet taking place from March 22-25 in Indianapolis.Â
