MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's tennis team struggled in its singles matches, ultimately leading to a 6-1 Hawkeye win Friday night at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Â
The meet started out in a tight battle for the doubles point, with the team of
Kelsey Grambeau and
Maria Avgerinos winning their set 6-3 and
Sydney Rider and
Christina Zordani dropping their set 6-3. It was up to
Michelle Linden and
Melissa Pick to pick up the first point, but after getting to five-all they were unable to seal the deal, falling 7-5.
Â
The Badgers fought hard in the singles matches but were unable to declaw the Hawkeyes. Pick had a thrilling match as the No. 5 player losing the first set 6-1 but rebounding with a 6-2 win in the second set. In the third she got out to a 4-1 lead but Iowa's Aimee Tarun came storming back to take a 5-4 lead. Pick countered, picking up the Badger's lone point of the night with a 7-5 third set win.
Â
Avgerinos and Grambeau were unable to keep the momentum of their doubles win, dropping their matches 6-3, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-3, respectively.
Â
Linden had a similar outcome in the No. 3 matchup. She kept it close in the first set before Adorabol Huckleby closed out the first set 6-4. In the second set Huckleby again took control, besting Linden 6-3.
Â
Rider and Zordani also failed to win a set. Rider, like Linden, lost 6-4 and 6-3 while Zordani fell 6-3 in each set.
Â
Wisconsin stays home for a Big Ten battle against Nebraska Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (CT).
