ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Wisconsin women's tennis team continued its tough stretch of dual matches Friday afternoon, battling the highly-ranked University of Michigan. The Badgers fell to the No. 9 Wolverines, 4-0.
Although Wisconsin held some tight matches in singles play, the Wolverines swept the doubles point, as well as the first three singles courts to clinch the match.
Playing at the No. 5 position, freshman Melissa Pick held her own right out of the gate. She swept Michigan's Kara Hall in the first set, 6-0, and had a 5-4 lead in the second set before her match was abandoned.
Senior Sydney Rider also displayed strong effort throughout singles play. After falling in the first set to Michigan's Mira Ruder-Hook, 6-2, Rider was not ready to give up. She led 4-3 in the second set before her match ended prematurely.
In doubles action, Michigan's Kate Fahey and Chiara Lommer cruised to a quick 6-0 victory over Christina Zordani and Rider. While Kelsey Grambeau and Maria Avgerinos jumped out to a 5-2 lead at the No. 1 doubles position, Michelle Linden and Pick could not defeat their Michigan opponents falling, 6-2.
Up next, Wisconsin heads to East Lansing to face Michigan State on Sunday, April 2. The match is set to begin at noon.
