CLEMSON, S.C.—After advancing all four boats into the A finals on Sunday, the 11th-ranked Wisconsin women's rowing team finished third overall as a team at the Clemson Invitational, despite inclement weather.
Wisconsin scored a total of 117 points, finishing second in two races, the second varsity eight race and varsity four, while finishing fourth in the varsity eight final and sixth in the third varsity eight competition.
Texas finished first while Ohio State came in second in the team competition. The points were calculated for finishes in the first and second varsity eight and varsity four races.
"It was a really good morning of racing," head coach
Bebe Bryans said. "This regatta was a great experience for us. Every boat learned a lot over the course of two days and three races."
UW was competitive throughout the day, finishing three seconds off the podium in both the varsity eight grand final and the third varsity eight race. UW raced its freshmen in the third varsity eight event.
In the second varsity eight grand final, the Badgers claimed second and finished behind first-place Texas by 2.5 seconds. In the varsity four grand final, Wisconsin missed the top prize by just half a second behind Ohio State.
While not earning first-place in the regatta, the Badgers' second varsity eight boat won some hardware for the breakout boat of the regatta. They were given the award for exceeding expectations and for going above and beyond what they were expected to do.
"I think we are in really good shape moving forward," Bryans said. "It was exactly why we came here, we finished third overall as a team, which we are really proud of. There was some really good competition here and we learned a ton so that's the main thing we are taking away."
After the Badgers return home from South Carolina, UW will host a Border Battle with Minnesota on Sunday, April 30. Wisconsin matched up against the Gophers in a few races at the Big Ten Double Dual, but they did not officially compete against each other. In their dual meet last season, the Badgers swept all seven races in Minneapolis to retain the Burnin' Blade.
