COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Wisconsin women's tennis team dropped its final regular season match of the season, 4-0, on the road against Maryland Sunday afternoon.
The Badgers (4-16) narrowly failed to secure the doubles point early on and never regained their footing.
At the No. 3 position, seniors Maria Avgerinos and Sydney Rider topped Maryland's Cassandre Thebault and Olivia Gaudreault, 6-3. Meanwhile, freshmen duo Melissa Pick and Michelle Linden fell short at the No. 2 position, dropping a 6-0 decision to Caroline Williams and Ekaterina Tour. The final doubles match rested in the hands of UW's duo of Kelsey Grambeau and Christina Zordani, who are 5-1 this season. After a difficult battle, the UW pair fell to Maryland's Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan, 7-5.
In singles play, the Badgers struggled on all courts. Maryland clinched the dual victory with wins on the first, second and fourth courts.
Wrapping up her first year as a Badger, Zordani proved determined to finish her first season strong. After taking the first set, 6-2, Zordani held close to her Maryland opponent trailing 6-5 in the second set before the match ended prematurely.
