MADISON, Wis. — After kicking off the season by hosting the Badger Invitational, the men's golf team hit the road to play in 10 more tournaments before finally making it to the grand finale: the 2017 Big Ten Championships.
Â
The Badgers are set to head east as this year's tournament will take place in Baltimore, Maryland, at the Baltimore Country Club from April 28-30.
Â
Following suit with the rest of the season, the lineup will feature plenty of youth as freshmen
Nick Robinson and
Pete Kuhl, sophomore
Jordan Hahn, junior Eddie Wajda and senior
Ben Skogen will be representing the Badgers.
Â
While having three underclassmen in the lineup may be rare, head coach
Michael Burcin sees unlimited potential in the trio.
Â
"They're very aggressive and there's not a lot of fear there. They can certainly be nervous at times, but they came in ready to go and they've done a really good job," Burcin said. "Eddie and Ben are certainly still in the mix and I look forward to them playing well this weekend, but I think once the freshmen and Jordan got their feet wet, they've taken off this year."
Â
All five golfers are no strangers to the pressure of Big Ten golf. After travelling the country all year to compete against some of the nation's top talent, the Badgers have fine-tuned the art of entering each tournament focused and ready to go.Â
Â
"I told them that we're going to play a golf tournament this weekend, just like we did last weekend, and there are going to be holes in the greens and 18 holes, so that's it," Burcin said. "Because we only get together once a year as a league, it's easy to put a lot of emphasis on that week, but really I think that's a little dangerous."Â
Â
At 6-foot-8, Hahn is intimidating on the course but his success this season is even more so. The Spring Grove, Illinois, native played in every tournament this year and picked up three top-10 finishes along the way.
Â
"I know Jordan, for one, can win this thing and he feels like he can too," Burcin said. "They all can, but Jordan has been in contention a few times this year and feels comfortable."
Â
The freshman duo of Kuhl and Robinson also appeared in every tournament and hold scoring averages of 74.93 and 74.82, respectively. Kuhl picked up four top-30 finishes to be a stabilizing force all season long, while Robinson highlighted his season by finishing third at the Boilermaker Invitational.
Â
Both Wajda and Skogen enter the Big Ten Championships with plenty of experience to rely on. Wajda started his season on a high note by tying for eighth at the Badger Invitational and Skogen led the Badgers at the FAMC Intercollegiate by tying for 13th.
