Sophomore becomes 40th All-American in UW men’s hockey history
MADISON, Wis. – Sophomore forward Luke Kunin was named to the 2016-17 CCM/AHCA All-America Team on Friday during the Frozen Four festivities in Chicago. Kunin, who was named to the west's second team, becomes the 40th Badger in school history to earn All-America honors for men's hockey.
Kunin, who recently became a professional hockey player with the AHL's Iowa Wild, shared second among Big Ten skaters with 22 goals. He also recorded 16 assists for a team-leading 38 points in 37 games played. For the Wild, he has already recorded the third hat trick in franchise history.
He finished the season with nine power-play goals, which shared third in the Big Ten, while his four short-handed points on two goals and two assists shared second in the league.
Kunin opened the scoring in six games during the season to lead the Badgers, and finished the season with a national-best sharing six goals in the first or last minute of periods, while sharing second in the country with 10 points in the first or last minute of a stanza.
He finished his Wisconsin career with 41 goals and 70 points in 69 games played and averaged 0.59 goals per game for his career, the highest total in the country among skaters who were in at least their sophomore seasons.
The 15th overall draft pick by the Minnesota Wild in the 2016 NHL Draft, Kunin became the second sophomore captain in UW men's hockey history, and also captained the United States to gold at the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship.
Kunin's selection as an All-American makes him the first Badger selected to a team since Michael Mersch and Jake McCabe were chosen as All-Americans during the 2013-14 campaign. The Chesterfield, Missouri, native is the 14th forward in UW history named an All-American.
