Why Not Wyderski?

Junior hits walkoff double to clinch win in extra innings

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin softball team (25-7 overall, 4-5 Big Ten) won its final game of the series against Iowa, (9-23, 3-6) 6-5, in a 10-inning thriller at Goodman Diamond on Sunday afternoon.

It was ultimately a double from Brooke Wyderski that allowed Kelsey Jenkins to come home and seal the win for the Badgers, who emerged from the weekend 2-1 against the Hawkeyes.

The game entered extra innings tied up at 4-4 after a huge sixth inning from UI where runs from McKenzie Schneider, Angela Schmiederer and Cheyenne Pratt erased the Black and Gold's 4-1 deficit.

Wisconsin had a chance to put the game away in the seventh inning with Gabby Scherle up to bat and Jordan Little on third, but Scherle grounded out giving the team their third out and ultimately sending to game to extra innings.

Iowa kept their momentum going into extras, going up 5-4 following a single to left field from Claire Fritsch in the ninth that let Schmiederer score, but the Badgers came back to tie things up, 5-5, after a hit by Scherle let Jordan Little come home to extend the game to the 10th inning.

In regulation, the Hawkeyes got on the board first in the third inning after Kaitlyn Mullarkey doubled to right center allowing Lea Thompson to run home, but it wasn't long until the Badgers were able to claim the lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Chloe Miller put the team up on top, 2-1, after smashing a home run that brought both her and Jenkins home.

UW extended its lead to 4-1 in the fifth inning thanks to a double from Melanie Cross that sent Heather Rudnicki to home plate and a single from Stephanie Lombardo that allowed Cross to come full circle.

Notes to Know:
-Wisconsin is now 3-2 in extra inning contests.
-Chloe Miller led the Badgers with two RBI on her fifth-inning homer. With her dinger, Miller moved into sole possession of the third-most all-time career runs and is just one home run away from tying Wisconsin's career home run record.
-Brooke Wyderski hit her 11th double of the season to secure the walkoff win. Wyderski and freshman Jordan Little shared team-high honors with three hits apiece.
-Wyderski led the Badgers with six hits on the weekend.
-Kaitlyn Menz pitched all 10.0 innings, throwing a career-high nine strikeouts.
-817 fans were in attendance at Goodman Diamond.

Details from the Dugout:
Overall thoughts:

"It was a lot of fun. Everyone stepped up, everyone worked together, our seniors really led us and Kate did a great job on the mound. A bunch of us just tried to stick it out, gut it out and we did it."

On how the team was able to make it through extra innings:
"We stuck together. That's our word we usually say, "together" and today really defined it. Our seniors especially, they were on us and pumping us up to win the entire game and this was for them."

On her plate approach prior to her walk-off:
"I just wanted to do a good job and move the runners at first because I knew I had Sara Novak behind me and I believe in trusting her, she's a great player. So that was my approach but somehow I got it done."
-Junior SS Brooke Wyderski

On how much work went into the win:
"After losing a couple close ones to Nebraska and just kind of falling apart in those games, it was awesome to get in the hard work this week and pull it out at home. At Northwestern when we lost a game on a walkoff hit, it was nice to be on our field and win on a walkoff hit and get those runs in."

On how she's prepared this week:
"Really working on hitting my spots and keeping my ball low and mixing around my pitches overall helped."

On her mindset during high-stress moments:
"I just took a deep breath and took it pitch-by-pitch. My catcher, Chloe Miller, really helps to keep me in the game and keep me focused on the next thing."

On what Coach Healy was telling the team in-between innings:
"She was telling the team, 'hey, Kate's doing her job for you guys, now let's go get those runs' and so that last inning was awesome to get those runs."
-Freshman P Kaitlyn Menz

On what this win means to the team:
"It just showed us that we could fight and that was what we said going into the day. Iowa had so much fight all weekend and yesterday I thought they just out-gutted us and we said if it's not a matter of talent, sometimes it's a matter of how hard you want it and how hard you're going to play. I thought the team just showed a ton of heart today and I love that side of it. There were so many ups and downs and close calls and everybody kept their composure. There were a ton of things that could've taken the wind out of their sails and this team stayed really tough."

On having a tough mentality and if it's something you work for:
"It's something that you have to learn and we got big performances from Brooke Wyderski; she did a great job and played better defense and hit the ball a ton. Jordan Little as a freshman with that many hits in a game and clutch ones, that's a lot.

On Menz's performance:
"After 10 innings I said to the team 'That's it, she's done her job. She's a freshman, she gave you 10 tough innings, it's time to win the game' and they took it seriously so good for them."
-Head coach Yvette Healy

Up Next:
The Badgers will head to West Lafayette, Indiana next weekend to take on Purdue in a three-game series. Game one will start on Friday, April 14th at 5 p.m. (CT).
