UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. – On the second day of the 2017 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the freshman duo of Emma Fitzgerald and Phoebe Edwards recorded points in the heptathlon in their first Big Ten competition on Saturday.

Fitzgerald placed fifth with a score of 5,255 that places the Braintree, Massachusetts, native sixth on the UW top-10 list. Edwards took eighth with a personal-best score of 4,786 points while junior Casie Pawlik also set a PR with a tally of 4,759 points.

"It was great to have three of our athletes in the top-10," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "It is an event that we historically do well and in many respects they are trying to create their own legacy. They understand the history and respect that and know they have a responsibility to continue the tradition."

"Yesterday I didn't really have the competitions I was hoping for," Fitzgerald said. "I got to long jump and was a little disappointed but not too bad. Coach (Nate) Davis told me that I had a shot at this thing and that my score is going to be way better than I thought. I went into the javelin with a pretty open mind and did pretty well. Then I just ran the 800 like the best that I could. I ran faster than I though and my score was a lot better than I was expecting, so I have no complaints."

The trio opened the day with stellar marks in the long jump as Pawlik soared 18-8 3/4, a personal best, to finish third in the event. Edwards also netted a PR with a jump of 18-1 while Fitzgerald soared 18-0 1/2.

Fitzgerald won the javelin with a heave of 154-4, almost 25 feet farther that the second-place finisher. The school record holder in the javelin, Fitzgerald's toss moved her from seventh to third. Edwards was third with a heave of 120-2 while Pawlik recorded a mark of 95-8.

Fitzgerald also led UW in the 800 meters, crossing the line in 2:26.67 while Pawlik and Edwards finished in 2:32.80 and 2:33.76, respectively.

"I was never a part of a team until I got to college so having two teammates and having them be as awesome as they are is amazing," Fitzgerald said. "They're always keeping me up and I always get really hard on myself and they always put me back in line and be like, 'hey, we're all in this.'

"They really make me feel at ease when I compete."

Sophomore Ebony McClendon advanced to Sunday's 100 thanks to a time of 11.71 in the prelims.

In the discus, sophomore Kennedy Blahnik came close to advancing to the final, but ultimately placed 10th with a throw of 162-1. Sophomore Hanna Barton was 15th with a mark of 154-1.

Sophomore Erin Wagner just missed out on scoring for UW in the steeplechase, finishing in a personal-best time of 10:29.86 en route to a ninth-place showing.

Freshman Gabby DesRosiers placed 21st in the 400 meters thanks to an effort of 56.25 while Mary Bartelson was 23rd in the long jump with a mark of 17-11 ½.

Wisconsin wraps up the conference meet on Sunday as the men's triple jump kickstarts action at 10:30 a.m. CT.
