Wagner finished the 8K course in 25 minutes, 56 seconds, to pick up his first career collegiate victory.
"He went after it," UW Director of Track and Field Mick Byrne said. "He had some fun with it and brought some of his teammates with him. Tannor's got a lot of leg speed. We saw that over that last 800 meters. He was really hauling. And he took some of his teammates with him and that's fun to see. They didn't back off despite some of this lousy weather right now. They followed the race plan and had fun with it and on we go."
Wagner was six seconds ahead of teammate Troy Smith, who placed second in 26:02.2.
Taking fourth place overall was sophomore Ryan Clevenger, who finished with a time of 26:08 while junior runner Zack Benning came in at 26:12.2 for a sixth-place finish.
Also running for the Badgers were sophomore Eric Brown and junior Cooper Barth, who took 10th and 22nd, respectively.
The meet was scored as a triple dual between Wisconsin, UNI and Illinois Chicago as the Badgers picked up a pair of wins. UW bested UNI 19-36 and UIC 16-39.
"This is what our sport is about," Byrne said. "It's head-to-head competition and at the end of the day you have a winner. The men let the race come to them and they had some fun in the process. Right around the 6K mark we said they could chase the leader down and Tannor and Troy did that."
Up next for the Badgers is a trip to Kentucky, as the Wisconsin men's cross country team prepares for the Greater Louisville Classic on Sept. 30. The meet will be held at Tom Sawyer State Park, which is also the site of the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Following the Greater Louisville Classic, UW will return home for the 2017 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational presented by Under Armour on Oct. 13 at the Zimmer Championship Course.
