MADISON, Wis. – After a successful home meet at the Mayflower Day Open, the Wisconsin men's cross country team heads to Louisville, Kentucky next weekend for the 2017 Greater Louisville Classic. The meet, which will take place at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park, will feature collegiate runners from across the country. It will start off with a men's 8K at 9:30 a.m. followed by the women's 5K race at 10:15 a.m. A recap will be available following the meet on UWBadgers.com.
1. Coming off of a W:Â The Badgers won the Mayflower Day Open on Sept. 16, which they hosted at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison. UW saw strong performances from freshman standout Tannor Wagner, senior Troy Smith, and sophomore Ryan Clevenger as Wagner won the individual 8K in his home debut.
2. Badgers return to the 'Ville:Â This year's Louisville meet will mark the first time that the Wisconsin men's cross country team has made an appearance at the Greater Louisville Classic since 2015. UW won the Greater Louisville Classic in 2014 thanks to Malachy Schrobilgen's second-place finish.
3. NCAA championship preview:Â Saturday's race will take place at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park, which will also serve as the site of the 2017 NCAA Division I National Championships in November. The Greater Louisville Classic is set to be a course preview for the Badgers as they look to compete again on the course later this season.
4. In the ranks:Â The Badgers remain at No. 7 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coaches' Poll and No. 7 in the FloTrack Rankings. In addition, senior Morgan McDonald is the No. 3 individual in Flotrack's individual rankings.
5. The Nutty is up next:Â After Saturday's race, the Badgers will prepare to host the ninth-annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational presented by Under Armour. Taking place at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational checked in as the No. 2 meet in the country according to FloTrack's meet rankings. Nineteen of the top-30 men's and women's teams in the country are expected to compete at the prestigious meet on Oct. 13.
