No. 12 Wisconsin battles Maryland to double-overtime draw

Friday’s game was Wisconsin’s fourth-straight OT game

MADISON, Wis. – The No. 12 Wisconsin women's soccer team battled through another Big Ten overtime game that ended in the Badgers' first tie of the season, 2-2, with Maryland.

UW appeared to have a victory locked up Friday in College Park, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half before ultimately going into double overtime.

The Badgers (8-2-1 Overall, 2-1-1 Big Ten) struck first versus the Terrapins of Maryland (7-2-2, 1-2-1) with sophomore forward Dani Rhodes netting the game's first goal in the 22nd minute, collecting the rebound off of a cross and putting it back in.

Three minutes later Rhodes was back at it, finding the back of the net for her second goal of the game and eighth of the season after shuffling past a Terrapin defender. Rhodes marked the first time a Badger has scored two goals in a game since Rose Lavelle did it on Oct. 26, 2016 against Rutgers.

Friday's second half told a different story for Wisconsin. In the 58th minute, Maryland midfielder Gi Krstec caught Wisconsin goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem out of position and put a 45-yard shot into the back of the net.

In the 68th minute it was defender Jenna Surdick sneaking a shot past Clem, tying the game 2-2.

Wisconsin has now played in four-straight overtime games, all versus Big Ten opponents. Friday's match was the Badgers' first double overtime game of the season and also the first one that ended in a tie. Wisconsin defeated Minnesota and Michigan State in overtime and lost to Michigan.

Clem faced 11 shots, five on goal and ended with three saves. Maryland keeper Rachel Egyed saw 12 Wisconsin shots, four on goal and saved two.

Before the tie, Wisconsin maintained a 3-0 road record while Maryland possessed an undefeated 4-0 home record.

Up next: The Badgers stay on the road as they head to No. 16 Rutgers on Oct 1. The game will be aired on the Big Ten Network with a noon (CT) start time.
