Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wisconsin falls to No. 13 Maryland

Badgers lose to Terrapins, 71-44

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's basketball team fell to No. 13 Maryland, 80-57, on Sunday afternoon in the Kohl Center.

The Badgers (7-10 overall, 0-4 Big Ten) battled the visiting Terrapins with several impressive defensive stands against one of the tops team in the Big Ten.

Maryland (15-2, 4-0) led 18-11 after the first quarter and led by as many as 10 (21-11) early in the second period.  A 3 pointer from Suzanne Gilreath cut the Terrapin lead to 23-18 with 3:10 to play but Maryland went on a 14-0 run to lead 37-18 at the half.

The Badgers put up a fight in the fourth quarter, behind the hot shooting of sophomore Courtney Fredrickson, who scored six points in the period. But the gap was too much to overcome as the Terrapins went on to win.

Sophomore Courtney Fredrickson led the Badgers with 12 points while junior Marsha Howard put up 10 points and added nine rebounds.

Maryland had four players reach double figures as the Terrapins shot 45.6 percent (26-57) for the game. The Badgers were limited to 30.9 percent (17-55) and lost the rebounding battle, 42-25.

STRAIGHT FROM THE COURT

Head Coach Jonathan Tsipis: "I told the team at the end of the game, I felt like last year when we played at Maryland, maybe we had been defeated before the game started. Our collective group today stuck to the game plan. We didn't turn it into a track meet the way that Maryland loves to play in transition. It was by no means perfect but I thought we did a good job of limiting the tempo with some different things. That's a credit to the players in our program.

"We had good fight. Our kids changed defenses well. We still have to be attacking. We broke their pressure, but we didn't make them pay trapping by being able to attack in advantage situations. We brought the ball back out and ran offense instead. To try to limit the tempo, we have to try to pick and choose to take advantage of certain situations. But that's what you deal with in this league. You're going to play teams night in and night out. As I look at it, I think we played better collectively, especially on the defensive end, than we did the other night versus Michigan."

Courtney Fredrickson
On losing by less than last year:
"A loss never feels good in my opinion, and everyone's opinion. We did make strides compared to last year, but we're never satisfied with a loss. It's still a loss. Every game we have to come out with energy and ready to go. We knew Maryland was a tough team but we were still going to come out and give them your all and fight to the end. I wouldn't say we're satisfied losing by 30 like that."

On how Maryland has changed as a team: "They're still a very run-and-gun team. They like the fast break, and they push in transition. Like coach said, I thought we did a good job of limiting some of that. At times they still had their fast-break points, but we did a good job of limiting. They're still a tough team where everyone can shoot and drive it."
