Duo earned wins at Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour
MADISON, Wis. – After sweeping the individual titles at the 2018 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour, the Wisconsin cross country duo of Morgan McDonald and Alicia Monson were named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Athletes of the Week, the organization announced Monday.
The two Badgers were the first ever in program history to earn USTFCCCA National Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors.
In his first cross country race in almost two years, McDonald didn't disappoint as he became the first Badger to win the men's individual title at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. A five-time Big Ten champion in cross country and track and field, McDonald finished the 8K course in 23 minutes, 17.6 seconds, besting Iowa State's Edwin Kurgat by a second.
The Sydney, Australia, native helped No. 9 Wisconsin to a runner-up finish, its best finish since finishing third at the 2014 meet, and topped No. 3 Portland, No. 5 Iowa State, No. 6 Alabama and No. 7 Colorado in the process.
Monson made a statement at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational as the junior took down reigning Nuttycombe and NCAA champion Ednah Kurgat of New Mexico and 2015 meet champion Allie Ostrander to become the first Badger to win the individual title at the prestigious meet. Monson crossed the 6K course in 19:33.3, defeating New Mexico's Weini Kelati, who was second in 19:35.9 and Kurgat, who was third in 19:38.8.
A native of Amery, Wisconsin, Monson led the No. 7 Badgers to their best-ever finish at the Nutty Invite as UW finished sixth as a team.
McDonald and Monson helped Wisconsin become the first school to sweep the individual titles at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in the meet's 10-year history.
The Badgers are preparing to host the 2018 Wisconsin Pre-Nationals on Saturday, October 13 at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
