It's been a fast fall, with nearly five weeks of practice in the books. It's amazing that we're down to our last few team practices, as we wrap up our non-traditional season that featured six days a week of practice, three days a week of weight lifting and eight exhibition games.
The morning lifting and practices give the fall season a much different feel than the spring. Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning we lift before practice, getting on the field from 8-10:30 a.m. Our team loves getting extra academic time in the fall, never missing a class, and having afternoons and weekends free for night class, labs, lectures, tutors and volunteer work.
We've spent a lot of time this fall, working on leadership, team bonding, and character focused chalk-talks. We started with a gratitude project, interviewing and thanking more than 20 members of our support staff, followed by a steak fry with donors, our team and support staff. We celebrated our back-to-back NCAA regional appearances, getting recognized at a Brewers/Cubs game in September, before venturing onto the high ropes course with leadership and trust lessons.
Our nutritionist, Nick, has taken us grocery shopping, shared recipes and created a "Chopped", team dinner cooking competition. We've hosted camps, clinics, recruiting events and tailgates, growing the game and sharing our Badger pride with pregame field passes, pumpkin carving contests, farmers market tours and a little miniature golf and driving range trips with our families.
On the field, it's been fun to see some new leaders emerge. Our sophomores look confident and ready to climb. We return a lot of success and experience on the mound and behind the plate. There are also some exciting new faces with power and speed to create different offensive options.
Next week the softball team will have a week off from practice and lifting, for fall break. After that, we'll return to workouts, with short eight-hour training week's filled with three days of lifting and conditioning, team yoga twice a week, and three hours of small group training sessions, until Christmas break.
