Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Badgers pound Saints, 7-1, in balanced effort

Sean Dhooghe records second two-goal game in win

Canton, N.Y. — Six different Badgers tallied goals as the Wisconsin men's hockey team rolled past St. Lawrence, 7-1, Saturday night at Appleton Arena.

Freshman forward Dominick Mersch opened the scoring for the Badgers (3-1-0, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) seven minutes into the first period when a shot by Roman Ahcan from along the boards hit off Mersch and in to give UW a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Mersch's first of his college career.

Sophomores Wyatt Kalynuk and Sean Dhooghe added goals in the second period to stretch the Badgers' lead over the Saints (1-3-0, 0-0-0-0 ECAC) to 3-0.

Despite conceding a goal from Saints' wing Michael Ederer in the opening minutes of the final frame, the Badgers scored four more goals, including three power-play tallies, to extend Wisconsin's lead to 7-1.

In his first start for the Badgers, freshman goaltender Daniel Lebedeff notched 20 saves in the victory.

Notes to Know:
- Dominick Mersch became the fourth UW freshman to score his first collegiate goal this season. Underclassmen account for 84 percent of the Badgers' goal-scoring so far this year.
- The Badgers scored three power-play goals and outshot the Saints, 46-21, in tonight's victory. Additionally, six UW skaters tallied multi-point games in the win.
- Sophomore Sean Dhooghe has notched five goals in three games. The forward's five tallies now pace the Badgers in goal-scoring. He had six goals all last season.

Straight from the Rink:
Freshman goaltender Daniel Lebedeff
On starting in his first college game:

"It's awesome. I've been waiting for this for the last couple months when I was back home. Now I'm here. It was a big relief to get it out of the way. It was a great game for us, and I'm happy for the result we got."

"I think this is what I've been practicing for, this game, this level. Three games in, I think all these years in Wisconsin have helped me prepare for this first game. It was good for me. Hopefully I can play like that all the time."

Senior forward Seamus Malone
On getting the win tonight:

"It was a great bounce-back by our team. It shows the kind of character that we've got. Last night, we didn't play our hardest and it showed. Tonight we came out with some energy and we took it to them right away. We kept the foot on the gas, so it was good."

On the team effort:
"That's how we're going to win games, when everyone's contributing and the whole bench is going. That's our advantage. We have such a deep team that when everyone's going, we're going to play really well."

On Lebedeff's play:
"He played great. He looked confident. He was making big saves for us. It's exciting to see that he was comfortable back there and playing his game."

Up Next:
The Badgers return to Madison next week, Oct. 26-27, for a series against Michigan Tech at the Kohl Center.
